John Wayne in "Neath Arizona Skies" with George Hayes

John Wayne in "Neath Arizona Skies" with George Hayes
Cat No. SUN-9041

John Wayne, as Chris Morrell, attempts to locate Shirley Jean Rickert's wayward father in this Western. The little girl, a "half-breed," is the heir to a 50,000-dollar Indian oil claim, but she needs the signature of her long-lost father in order to collect. Chris Morrell, Nina's foster father, manages to get the girl out of town before Sam Black (Yakima Canutt) and his gang can get their grubby hands on her and her inheritance, but other villains learn of the girl's potential windfall, including express office robbers Vic Byrd (Jack Rockwell) and Jim Moore (Jay Wilsey). When Vic finally gets hold of the child, he is shot and killed by one of his own hands, Tom (Earl Dwire), who is revealed to be Nina's real father. With Tom's help, Chris manages to trick the Black gang and is able to storm their hideout. In the ensuing melee, Tom is fatally shot but Byrd manages to escape with Nina. Chris goes after them and there is a final confrontation in a raging river. 'Neath the Arizona Skies was based on Gun Glory, a short story by B.R. Tuttle

John Wayne in "Lawless Range"

 John Wayne in "Lawless Range"
Cat No. SUN-9042

In this, his fourth Western for Republic Pictures, John Wayne plays John Middleton, a would-be rodeo rider forsaking his chance of winning the championship in favor of searching for an old family friend who is missing under mysterious circumstances. After carrying out a bit of undercover work with the help of the missing man's pretty niece, Ann Mason (Sheila Mannors), John is ready to join the local ranchers in their fight against unscrupulous banker Frank Carter, aka Butch Martin (Frank McGlynn, Jr.), who is trying to steal their gold rich land. As he had in his earlier Riders of Destiny (1933), John Wayne "sings" a couple of ditties, including "On the Banks of the Sunny San Juan", his unlikely baritone this time supplied by bit player Jack Kirk. Adding to the unusually high musical quotient is the harmony group The Wranglers performing "The Old Dusty Road".

John Wayne in "The Desert Trail"

John Wayne in "The Desert Trail"
Cat No. SUN-9043

John Wayne's easy-going charm truly began to manifest itself in this, one of his later "Lone Star" Westerns for Monogram. Falsely accused of killing the paymaster (Henry Hall) of the Rattlesnake Gulch rodeo, John Scott (Wayne) and his girl-chasing partner Kansas Charlie (Eddy Chandler) trail the real killer, Pete (Al Ferguson), and his unwilling underling Jim (Paul Fix) to Poker City. Jim wants to go straight, but Pete blackmails him into robbing the stagecoach. John and Kansas, who are known in town as Jones and the Reverend Smith, are once again accused of the crime, but Jim helps them escape from jail. When the young bandit refuses to commit bank robbery, Pete shoots him in cold blood. The villain is caught by John and Kansas, whom Jim has cleared of all crimes on his deathbed. The Desert Trail was directed with easy assurance by the veteran Lewis D. Collins, who for some reason billed himself "Cullin Lewis."

"Stagecoach" starring John Wayne

 "Stagecoach" starring John Wayne
Cat No. SUN-9044

Stagecoach became a template for all movie Westerns which followed. Director John Ford combined action, drama, humour, and a set of well-drawn characters in the story of a stagecoach set to leave Tonto, New Mexico for a distant settlement in Lordsburg, with a diverse set of passengers on board. Sheriff Wilcox (George Bancroft) is along for the trip to offer protection and keep an eye peeled for the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), a well-known outlaw who has just broken out of jail. While Wilcox does find Ringo, a principled man who gives himself up without a fight, the real danger lies farther down the trail, where a band of Apaches, led by Geronimo, could attack at any time. Stagecoach offers plenty of cowboys, Indians, shootouts, and chases, aided by Yakima Canutt's remarkable stunt work and Bert Glennon's majestic photography of Ford's beloved Monument Valley. John Wayne's performance made him a star after years as a B-Western leading man, and Thomas Mitchell won an Oscar for what could have been just another comic role. Thousands of films have followed Stagecoach's path, but no has ever improved on its formula.

John Wayne in "McLintock! Is McNificent"

John Wayne in "McLintock! Is McNificent"
Cat No. SUN-9045

George Washington McLintock (John Wayne) has a saddlebag full of trouble. The owner of the largest ranch in the territory, which also includes a mine and a timber mill that he built up himself, should be a happy, fulfilled man, but he isn't. His wife Katherine (Maureen O'Hara) walked out on him two years ago without a word of explanation. Katherine is coming back to secure a divorce and take custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Rebecca (Stefanie Powers), who's been at school in the east and no longer likes anything to do with the west, any more than her mother does. All of that — plus the presence of a young hired hand (Patrick Wayne) who's interested romantically in McLintock's daughter — is the setup for a sprawling comedy Western with serious overtones, part battle-of-the-sexes and part political tract.

"The Lone Ranger - Enter The Lone Ranger" also featuring "Six Gun Legacy" and "Finders Keepers"

"The Lone Ranger - Enter The Lone Ranger" also featuring "Six Gun Legacy" and "Finders Keepers"
Cat No. SUN-9046

"Hi-Yo Silver!" - The Lone Ranger began life as a radio series on Detroit's WXYZ in 1933, where it was created by the stations owner George W. Trendle, producer James Jewell and writer Fran Striker. The show became an instant hit, was taken up nationally and turned into two film serials by Republic. In 1949 it arrived on America's ABC network to become one of the first major hits on television. The first episode told of how John Reid, one of six Texan Rangers, was the sole survivor of an ambush by the Butch Cavendish Hole In The Wall Gang. Reid was nursed back to health by an Indian scout called Tonto, who declared "You only Ranger left. You lone ranger now." Reid then set off to avenge the death of his five colleagues, one of whom was his own brother. With his trademark white hat, black mask and horse called Silver, the newly dubbed Lone Ranger set off with Tonto (who referred to him as 'Kemo Sabe', meaning 'trusty scout'), on his crusade to "clean up the town", that was any town where villainy was in evidence or a wrong needed to be put right. Having done so he would then ride off into the distance with a "Hi-yo, Silver -away!", leaving his beneficiaries to ponder the question, "Who was that masked man?" The show followed a strict set of guide-lines, as laid down by the production company. "The Lone Ranger never shoots to kill, he uses perfect grammar and his ultimate objective must be towards the development of the west of our country." Parents loved the patriotism and the moralistic story lines, and even FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover described it as "one of the forces for juvenile good in the country." With it’s rousing William Tell Overture, it’s fast paced action, simple plots and zero character development, The Lone Ranger was the very embodiment of an idealised west, which had only ever existed within the minds of its creators and the character's uncountable legions of adoring fans. This collection of 3 great episodes, are from a total of 182 which were produced from 1949 through to 1957: "Enter The Lone Ranger" also featuring "Six Gun's Legacy" & "Finders Keepers"

"Bonanza - The Last Trophy" also featuring "The Trail Gang" and "The Abduction"

"Bonanza - The Last Trophy" also featuring "The Trail Gang" and "The Abduction"
Cat No. SUN-9051

Take the tried and tested gun slinging, two-fisted, appeal of the western genre and mix it with the potently powerful and enduring values of family loyalty, honour, square dealing and unswerving respect for what's right. Bonanza was phenomenally successful television series of legendary status. Running for 14 years on it's native NBC network in the US, Bonanza was set on the vast Ponderosa timber and cattle ranch in Nevada in the 1860's. The ranch was inhabited by three times widowed Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) and his three sons, all from different deceased mothers. Adam (Pernell Roberts), Hoss (Dan Blocker), and the youngest of the trio, Little Joe (Michael Landon). A number of other characters to feature regularly included Virginia City Sheriff Roy Coffee, and the Cartwright's Chinese chef Hop Sing. The show was notable for being the first TV western to be shot in colour and was filmed in the Lake Tahoe area. A major success on both sides of the Atlantic and sold to over fifty other countries, Bonanza was finally bought down by the untimely death of the immensely popular Dan Blocker, the last show, the 430th in the series, aired on 23rd January 1973. Along with Gunsmoke, Bonanza stands as the quintessential embodiment of US television's long-standing affair with America's most enduringly romanticised historical period. This DVD disc includes 3 classic Bonanza episodes. (The Last Trophy also featuring The Trail Gang & The Abduction)

The Bells of San Angelo was the second Republic Roy Rogers western to be filmed in the "new" Trucolor process. Set in the modern west, the story involves a silver-smuggling racket headed by rotten Rex Gridley (John McGuire). In a novel scripting touch, Roy Rogers doesn't outwit the villains-and in fact is soundly beaten by the bad guys halfway through the film. It's up to heroine Lee Madison (Dale Evans), a writer of fanciful cowboy novels, to save the day! Roy Rogers is taken off his "King of the Cowboys" pedestal in Bells of San Angelo and the film is all the better for it – he’s just human after all.

Jimmy Lloyd co-stars as an aviator who figures prominently in the action-packed finale. Autry's leading lady this time out is Patricia White, who later gained prominence on TV as Patricia Barry.
