Steam Engines Of British Railways

 Steam Engines Of British Railways
Cat No. 94883

This programme takes a look at the some of the 2,500 steam engines built by British Railways between 1948 and 1960, and operated in Britain until the end of steam in 1968. Now many are thankfully preserved on railways across the country – ranging from small shunters to large express and freight locos. Many of these were based on the old constituent railway companies, but British Railways did evolve its own designs which feature in the programme – such as the Britannia Class, designed for express passenger work and the Standard Class 4 tank, which were used primarily on commuter services. The most famous loco of this time is Standard Class 9F number 92220 Evening Star - preserved as the last steam loco to be built by British Railways, in 1960. Locos based on the North Yorkshire Moors, Keighley and Worth Valley, Great Central Railway, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire and the West Somerset Railways, as well as on the main line are included in the programme.

TRAINS REMEMBERED Volume 3 takes a nostalgic look at the great days of British railways and includes RARE FOOTAGE from the 1930s to 1980s. The programme includes footage of The Flying Scotsman, Swindon Works, and the Longmuir Military system. Ranging in time from the early 30s to the late 80s, TRAINS REMEMBERED Volume 3 utilises archive film to create a vivid recollection of the golden days of the railways. Old Southern Railway trains are shown on their way to the seaside, followed by the approaches to Waterloo Station in the snow of 1947. The now closed Swindon Works is shown, first in the 30s where a loco is steaming away on the stationary testing rig, followed by a visit in 1975 during the diesel-hydraulic era when classes 47 and 52 are seen, and finally a visit in 1987 during the last weeks of the works. The 150th anniversary of the Festiniog in 1986 is celebrated, showing most of the locos and a gravity slate train in action. 1986 was also the 150th Anniversary of the London and Greenwich Railway. A big exhibition was head in Cannon Street Station where electric trains gave rides, and Sir Lamiel, an SR steam loco is shown, and this leads to steam runs out of Marylebone, and report on 4472. The famous Flying Scotsman; from Kings Cross in 1968, its USA trip, and runs out of Denham.

The Steam Era - Trains To Tenterden

The Steam Era - Trains To Tenterden
Cat No. 94906

The Kent and East Sussex Railway was built in the 19th century by Colonel Stevens. The line wound its picturesque way through the garden of England peacefully until 1961 when it was closed down by British Rail. The working life of the railway, beginning in the 1930s is beautifully chronicled in this programme. Highlights, which include rare colour footage shot in 1950, also tell of the troubled, but ultimately triumphant, efforts of a dedicated band of preservationists to restore the railway to its former glory and once more send Trains to Tenterden.

The Steam Era - Steaming Back To Marylebone
Cat No. 94908

This DVD gives a vivid account of the history of one of London’s most famous stations and its associated Great Central Railway and Hotel. The station, first built in 1899 when it had only four platforms, was in its halcyon days graced by some of the most famous names of steam, such as The Flying Scotsman and The Mallard, shown here in the full grandeur. The moving moment is recorded when the last commercial Black Five steams out of the station and rare film footage documents its historic progress north en-route to Nottingham. Marylebone’s links with the Golden Age of Steam still linger even today and since 1985 steam specials have been run. Classic Trams

 Classic Trams
Cat No. 96020

Electric trams first appeared in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century. Horse-drawn tramcars had been around since the late 1870s, but it was the development of electric traction that tramcars really came into their own. Single-deck trams, then double-deck open trams and later open-balcony trams became a familiar sight around the British Isles. Towns and Cities such as Glasgow, Sheffield, Blackpool, Southampton, Leicester, Leeds, Cardiff and London had extensive tramway systems. But many systems were damaged in the Second World War, just as the trolleybus was gaining popularity, and the tram systems were gradually scrapped. Fortunately, many examples of tramcars are persevered today, either in museums or in active service – and this programme travels back in time to the height of tramcars’ popularity. We visit various locations to find some of the best examples of restored trams – from Sheffield, to Blackpool and from Glasgow to Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire.

Classic Trolley Buses

 Classic Trolley Buses
Cat No. 96026

The history of the trolleybus dates back as far as 1882, to a small Berlin suburb where an experimental display of this type of transport continued until 13th June 1882. In 1911 Bradford and Leeds became the first British cities to offer trolleybuses that could carry passengers, and eventually, 50 trolleybus routes operated in Britain, the largest being in London which began in May 1931. Following the Second World War, London Transport needed new trolleybuses to replace ageing examples, and the 15 trolleybuses destroyed in the war – so an order for 77 British United Traction trolleybuses was placed in 1946. Glasgow was the last trolleybus system to be inaugurated in the British Isles, the system opening on 3 April 1949 but lasted a total of only 18 years. The introduction of trolleybuses eased traffic congestion and High Street was one of the first thoroughfares to benefit from the lifting of tram tracks. At its peak, the city's trolleybus system had 195 vehicles, the highest of any city outside London..

 Dean Forest Steam Railway
Cat No. 96045

There is nothing like the sight, sound and even smell of a steam locomotive in action to create a sense of nostalgia, and as preservation societies all around Great Britain flourish, these miracles of early engineering are just as popular as they ever were during the Golden Age of Steam. Our destination in this programme is the Dean Forest Railway, a fine example of a steam society in the heart of the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. From sunrise we join the volunteers as they prepare for a busy steam day, and as the fires are lit and the engine is polished, the atmosphere of a bygone era is rekindled, as the railway comes alive and begins to buzz with anticipation. Then take a trip through the forest landscape and discover the history of steam, from Stephenson’s “Rocket” and Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s broad gauge right through to the preserved steam societies of today. Only in the past century and a half have we enjoyed the luxury of a well-maintained, surfaced network of roads which would not have been possible without the humble steam roller. Evolved from horse drawn portable engines, the earliest purpose-built steam roller was made in France in 1861. Four years later, the first steam roller to be used in the UK was developed by what became the largest manufacturer, Aveling and Porter.

GWR Locos Through Time

 GWR Locos Through Time
Cat No. 96299

The first locomotives for the Great Western Railway were specified by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but it was the GWR’s first Locomotive Superintendent, Daniel Gooch, who designed the railway’s early broad gauge icons such as Fire Fly and Iron Duke. But perhaps the GWR Chief Engineers George Jackson Churchward, who introduced the 4-6-0, and Charles Collett, who was tasked not only with standardisation, but also produced two of the Great Western Railway’s iconic locomotive classes, the Kings and Castles, who have left the biggest mark, certainly in terms of GWR locomotives in preservation today. With many locos filmed in stunning HD, GWR Locos Through Time features the pick of locomotives from the Great Western Railway’s history including the Bluebell Railway’s Dukedog, the Earl of Berkley, the magnificent Modified Hall, Foremarke Hall a resident at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway and Didcot Railway Centre’s precious gems, the 1917 Churchward Mogul, the broad gauge replica, Fire Fly and the GWR diesel railcar.

Titanic - A Legend Built In Belfast

Titanic - A Legend Built In Belfast
Cat No. 96314

This programme tells the definitive story of the building of the Titanic, and includes interviews with people who saw the great vessel being built and launched and those whose lives it has touched in different ways. It also revisits the slipway at the Harland & Wolff shipyard where, in 1911, 15,000 shipbuilders worked on the construction of the Titanic and its sister ship the Olympic. It features an interview with Belfast-born film director Bill MacQuitty whose 1950 film A Night to Remember, first told the epic story of the Titanic disaster. Clips from this film are also included in this absorbing documentary about the ill-fated Titanic and the city where it was built. The legacy of failure that haunted Belfast for the past century, following the Titanic disaster, has finally given way to a much more positive mentality, where the achievement of actually building such an engineering marvel is finally being recognised and celebrated, as this documentary confirms.

Classic Trams, Trolleybuses, Buses And Coaches

Classic Trams, Trolleybuses, Buses And Coaches
Cat No. 86365M

~ Trams ~ Electric trams first appeared in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century. ~ Trolleybuses ~ The history of the trolleybus dates back as far as 1882, to a small Berlin suburb where an experimental display of this type of transport continued until 13th June 1882. In 1911 Bradford and Leeds became the first British cities to offer trolleybuses that could carry passengers, and eventually, 50 trolleybus routes operated in Britain, the largest being in London which began in May 1931. Glasgow was the last trolleybus system to be inaugurated in the British Isles, the system opening on 3 April 1949 but lasted a total of only 18 years. ~ Buses & Coaches ~ Never has such an everyday means of transport been more popular than the humble bus. Single deckers, open tops, single cabs, double deckers, london transport and luxury coaches can all evoke a special memory of a journey to somewhere in the past. Visiting bus and coach rallies up and down the country, we relive those memories of days gone by looking at the world of the bus and coach enthusiasts.
