A Feast Of British Steam

 A Feast Of British Steam
Cat No. ATDVD3BX001

~ DISC ONE - TITANS OF STEAM ~ For almost 40 years, the 'big four' railway companies and British Rail turned out hundreds of powerful locomotives. This all-action programme looks at those that survived, and have found a new lease of life on preserved railways all over Britain. Mighty Pacifics of the Southern railway, includes the Merchant Navy and West Country Classes, now work on lines such as the Great Central, North York Moors and Swanage Railways. Memories of the Great Western Railway live on its Castles, Kings, Manors and Halls, which still operate all over the South West. The magnificent workhorses of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway steam on in the North and Midlands. The preserved locomotives of the London and North Eastern Railway include household names such as 'The Flying Scotsman' and 'Sir Nigel Gresley'. There are also War Department and British Rail designs, culminating in might tank engines and ten-coupled freight engines. ~ DISC TWO - THE CLASSICS ~ Britain's railways have always been built on technology. From Victorian times to modern day, locomotive design has come a long way. Some engines stand out from the rest. Ancient or modern, large or small, they are the great trains, classic designs that define an era and capture the imagination Footage includes: The prince on the Ffestiniog Railway; The 5700 class of the GWR on the Yorkshire Pennines; The Stainer Black 5s in the Forth of Faith; The Bluebell line and Richard Maunsell's Locomotives; British Rail Class 37s cross the wild landscape of the Northern Highlands. ~ DISC THREE - A FEAST OF STEAM ~ An immense variety of live steam is featured in this incredible and unique tribute to the preserved British Steam Locomotive. There are pre-amalgamation locomotives, as well as examples from the 'big four' industrial and narrow gauge and BR standard classes. A veritable feast of steam with plenty of action.

Steam Around The World - African Archives

Steam Around The World - African Archives
Cat No. ATDVD1122

Rails all the way from Cape to Cairo were once the dream of Victorian pioneer Cecil Rhodes. In 1965 and 1970, the dying years of the Age of Steam, Harry Dodge visited and recorded this incredible African legacy. Throughout Central and Southern Africa, the uncompromising terrain spawned some spectacular feats of engineering. Many of these, including the famous Victoria Falls bridge, are captured when huge fleets of Garratts still ruled supreme. Malawi Railway, Rhodesian Railways and Franco-Ethiopian Railways are all featured, as well as the steam trains of South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and the Sudan. This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P. Dodge. Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the world's railways in the '60s and early '70s.

Best Of British Steam - Northern England

Best Of British Steam - Northern England
Cat No. ATDVD1001

The North of England, birthplace of the industrial revolution, is home to an enormous variety of steam interest. In Middleton, near the centre of Leeds, one of the world's oldest railways has been resurrected, while the Bowes Railway still works its early rope hauled inclines. In the Lake District, narrow gauge steam conveys tourists through the beautiful scenery of Ravenglass and Eskdale, but equally delightful are the standard gauge Railways over the North Yorkshire Moors, and in the high valley of South Tyneside. Active preservation societies operate traditional Pennine branch lines at the Keighley and Worth Valley, and in East Lancashire. Steam centres at Carnforth and Southport maintain locomotives which have access to BR's main lines, but the whole is finely complemented by collections from the National Railway Museum at York and the Beverly Museum of Army Transport.

The Bluebell Railway was Britain's first preserved standard gauge railway, and it is still expanding, as is the nearby Kent and East Sussex, and the Great Central Railway (which has now adopted main line running). The Severn Valley Railway promotes itself as Britain's premiere steam railway, while Paignton and Dartmouth is 'the holiday line'. All demonstrate the enormous enthusiasm generated by the steam locomotive. Other tastes are catered for by the Lavender line's Wine & Dine Steam Specials. The Sittingbourne and kemsley and the Foxfield Railway both appeal to industrial enthusiasts, and the incredible Romney Hythe and Dymchurch, the most fully equipped 15th gauge railway in the world, is also featured. We finish with the South Devon Railway, the epitome of a GWR rural branch line.

Best Of British Steam - Wales

Best Of British Steam - Wales
Cat No. ATDVD1004

The small narrow gauge lines that once carried slate and other materials from the quarries to the Welsh coast led the way for the British Railway Preservation Movement. Today these lines provide for railway enthusiasts and tourists alike, and this programme features the activities of the Ffestiniog Railway, Welsh Highland Railway, Bala Lake, Llanberis Lake, Corris, and the father of them all, the Talyllyn Railway. Railways at Fairbourne and on the slopes of Snowdon (Wales' highest mountain) were built to cater for visitors, as was the Conway Valley Railway Museum and the Great Orme Tramway at Llandudno. But standard gauge locomotives were also busy, on the Llangollen Railway and on the Cambrian main line along the North Wales coast. The programme ends in Aberystwyth, with the Electric Cliff Railway, and the Vale of Rheidol, the last steam to be operated by British Rail.

Fenland Trains - The Railways Of East Anglia

Fenland Trains - The Railways Of East Anglia
Cat No. PEGDVD1254

We begin this DVD with an extensive look at the railways in the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; in particular, the city of Ely and its surrounding railway routes. Filmed between 2000 and 2004 we concentrate mainly on the freight scene in these areas. The freight in both counties are mainly aggregate, intermodel, and deep sea container workings. Locomotive classes hauling these trains consist of 37, 47, 56, 57, 58, 60 and, of course, the ubiquitous class 66. In addition to these freight workings we see the newly introduced 'ONE' (formerly Anglia Railways) Train Operating Company seen in the summer of 2004. With the lowering of the Ipswich tunnel, diesel hauled passenger trains en route to London Liverpool Street were diverted through Ely. Both Anglia and ONE liveries can be seen with scenes of Ely's magnificent cathedral. Moving a little east, we filmed at various locations between Ely and Bury St Edmunds, and finally we trek north across the flat lands of the Fens with its many unobstructed locations. Many freightliners can be seen bringing lots of colour to a somewhat barren landscape. Special trains such as steam and diesel in the form of Class 55 Deltics and Class 47s can also be seen in and around the Ely area, with no fewer than 30 locations visited. With detailed location maps it all adds up to a fascinating and intensive programme. Some narration is added together with train details and head codes. Also in this DVD is a short pictorial of what else Ely has to offer other than great train locations.

We filmed the Class 56 hard at work together with Class 60s and 66s in wonderful afternoon sunshine. Filmed on separate days, Linslade on the four track section of the West Coast Mainline sees a considerable amount of both freight and passenger trains including the celebrated Class 86s and 87s plus Virgin's newly introduced Class 390 Pendolinos. Steam freight and passenger trains, are included, as well as tank engines and turn tables, and everything from mighty 2-10-0s to tiny narrow gauge locos; whilst not forgetting all the activity behind the scenes. This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P. Dodge. Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the world's railways in the '60s and early '70s.

Ffestiniog Railway - 125 Years Of Steam

Ffestiniog Railway - 125 Years Of Steam
Cat No. AR041D

The Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales was originally constructed to convey slate from the quarries in Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. The line was built on a steep incline to facilitate the use of gravity trains. In 1863, the increase in traffic forced the owner to consider different forms of motive power. After many trials and much development work, a special design of locomotive incorporating power bogies took to the narrow gauge rails. During the Spring of 1988, the railway celebrated 125 years of steam power with a gala weekend spanning 3 glorious days which saw the return to service of the newly restored Fairlie double engine Merddin Emrys, vintage trains hauled by Prince, visiting W.H.R. Locomotive Russell, and much more besides. Our cameras were there to record the event in full, and this film, produced in conjunction with, and the full cooperation of the Ffestiniog Railway Society includes exclusive footage shot on the double headed run up the line with Blanche and Mountaineer.

At Disentis in the valley of the Vorder Rhein, the Rhatische Bahn makes an end on junction with the Furka-Oberalp railway where its locomotives take over such famous trains as the Glacier Express. Descending the fertile valley and cutting through a gorge with unusual geological formations, it comes to Reichenau, the junction for the line to St.Moritz, before speeding along the double track into Chur, the capital of Canton Graubunden. Here, it connects with the Federal Railways with which it runs almost parallel to Landquart where the Rhatische Bahn's most important workshops are situated. The line then swings up the valley of the Landquart river to the well known resort of Klosters before beginning a punishing climb towards Davos from where the line continues down the valley of the Landwasser, crossing an impressive viaduct on the way, to the junction with the St. Moritz line at Filisur.

The Monmouthshire And Brecon Canal

 The Monmouthshire And Brecon Canal
Cat No. AR233D

The South Wales Valleys underwent a dramatic transformation at the end of the 18th century to become one of the hotbeds of the Industrial Revolution. The reason was simple: in no other part of Britain could wood, coal, iron ore and limestone be found in such profusion in proximity to one another. They were the four essential components for the creation of iron, and a new iron age was born. To transport the iron to the sea, in June 1792 the Monmouthshire Canal Company obtained parliamentary consent for a canal. In the same year the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal Company announced plans to build its own canal. The two projects were amalgamated to become what is known as the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. This canal, from the Brecon Beacons Mountain Range down to the Bristol Channel, is one of the immense engineering feats of the early 19th century. It can still be followed through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country from its basin in Brecon all the way to Newport. A large part of the canal is still navigable and with its partners, Monmouthshire County Council, Newport and Torfaen County Borough Councils, British Waterways is currently putting into operation exciting plans to open the remainder of this special waterway from Five Locks, Cwmbran to Newport.
