A collection of three original wartime instructional films about the hazards faced - and the methods employed - in the identification, reporting and defusing of a whole range of German unexploded bombs in a variety of challenging locations on the British Home Front. Entertaining The Royal Air Force: The ‘Astra Gazette’ Newsreels 1951 - 1959

Entertaining The Royal Air Force: The ‘Astra Gazette’ Newsreels 1951 - 1959
Cat No. SN6669

The Royal Air Force “Astra Gazette” newsreels were made by Pathé in the 1950’s to be shown to serving RAF personnel in the RAF’s very own Astra Cinemas that were housed on their air bases all over the world! The surviving editions start with the young Princess Elizabeth taking the place of her sickly father, King George VI at the graduation parade at RAF Cranwell way back in 1951. Most of the Astra Gazettes used a newsy format with short items featuring many young ladies in swim suits to keep the lads happy! But it is the Astra Gazette’s ‘insider’ round up of RAF news stories which afford such a fascinating insight into the RAF of the 1950’s and include many of the key service personalities of the time such as Douglas Bader and Bob Stanford Tuck. By 1953, Pathé were filming all the items in full colour such as Ejector Seat Testing, a Sunderland flying boat rescue and the 1955 closure of the famous RAF Fighter Station at Biggin Hill. The reports end with RAF Waddington receiving The Freedom of the City of Lincoln with some stunning shots of the Vulcan in 1959. Film stars of the time also feature heavily including Peter Cushing, Jill Day, Jack Hawkins and Lee Patterson.

F-22 Raptor: America's Fiercest Killing Machine

F-22 Raptor: America's Fiercest Killing Machine
Cat No. SNA6668

The U.S. Air Force Raptor is an aircraft designed to kill. It is the most formidable air superiority fighter in the skies of all time and at nearly £100 million per aircraft, one of the most expensive. It may well also be the last of its kind. The F-22, for all its sophistication, has a direct genesis from the fighters of the First Word War. The young pilots then were told to attack out of the sun, and the pilots of the Raptor still do exactly the same today! Until now, the Raptor has been one of the most closely guarded secret projects of the U.S. Air Force. This DVD presents some never before seen footage of the F-22 at work. Taking the ‘cloak’ off this unique fighter was not easy, but now its story can be told. It is a phenomenal piece of hardware; truly a fifth generation fighter. But for all its sophistication, it is actually an easier plane to fly, and service than its predecessors, thus making deployment in conflict easier and quicker than the F-15 and F-16, which it will ultimately be replacing. Whilst primarily a fighter, the F-22 also has multiple role capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence. Stealth technology allows it to fly virtually unseen by enemy radar. The F-22 is a demanding aircraft; flies very fast, and the physical stresses on the pilots are truly severe. The F-22’s movable engine nozzles, allow it to nearly hover like a Harrier in flight, waiting to pounce on an enemy. While it carries very sophisticated air-to-air missiles, it also, like its forerunners, carries a gun, a weapon that the pilot can himself manually aim and pull the trigger of. So this aircraft, for all of its wonder, remains a lean, mean, fighting machine.

Dig For Victory: The Ministry Of Food And The Battle To Feed Wartime Britain 1940 - 1944

Dig For Victory: The Ministry Of Food And The Battle To Feed Wartime Britain 1940 - 1944
Cat No. SND6666

This DVD companion to the Imperial War Museum's Second World War "Ministry Of Food" Exhibition is the definitive compilation of their own film archive's holdings on every stage of the food chain; food production, preparation and consumption. It affords a very detailed insight into the logistical struggle to feed the British during the dark days of war; both fighting servicemen and civilians on the home front. The Ministry Of Food had the unenviable task of keeping the public constantly aware of the shortage of food as ships containing much needed imports were a constant target for the Luftwaffe and the German Navy. It was imperative that the nation endeavored to self-sufficiency as far as was practicable and these films encourage the British public's positive adaptation to the privations of shortages and rationing with an emphasis on how to be frugal and inventive on the 'Kitchen Front', on avoiding waste, on reducing imports through the promotion of 'seasonal' produce and fool-proof instructional films on how to grow one's own food. The WVS and 'Food Flying Squads' leapt into nightly action during the 'Blitz' to feed the wardens, rescue teams, firemen and civilians who had been bombed out of their homes. Communal dining in a chain of 'British Restaurants' helped ration coupons to go further. The Ministry of Information used many star names from the theatre and variety revues of the time such as Tommy Trinder, Ted Ray, Ronald Shiner, Arthur Haynes, Charlie Chester, Jimmy Handley, John Slater, Ralph Richardson, and Hubert Gregg. The Army is commonly said to ‘march on its stomach’, but feeding the forces on the frontline was fraught with challenges. The Ministry of Information commissioned short-form ‘Public Information Films’ on all aspects of the war effort and the finale of this collection is a selection of the very best of these films that make reference to food, helping with the harvest and the famous ‘Food Flashes’ all of which were shown in the cinema’s of the time.

The Cool Mikado

 The Cool Mikado
Cat No. SNFILM1005

Once upon a time, Gilbert and Sullivan wrote their famous comic opera, The Mikado. Any resemblance between their creation and this film is completely accidental! Hank, son of American judge Herbert Mikado, refuses to marry his father’s chosen bride, the vampish Katie Shaw, and joins the army. He is then posted to Japan, where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Yum-Yum. Unfortunately, she already has an avid suitor: infamous local gangster, Ko-Ko Flintridge… In his first ever musical, Frankie Howerd stars as Ko-Ko alongside Tommy Cooper as incompetent private detective Pooh-Bah and Stubby Kaye as Judge Herbert Mikado in a high-camp reworking of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous comic opera, directed by Michael Winner. Updated to the Swinging Sixties, The Cool Mikado features a gloriously incongruous soundtrack (with arrangements by John Barry and Martin Slavin), and is possibly the only production to boast a Three Little Maids that breaks into a Cha-Cha-Cha dance routine, a Lord High Executioner chorus with a Tijuana brass backing, and a bagpipe rendition of We are Gentlemen of Japan! Luftwaffe Jets, Rockets And Secret Weapons Of World War Two

Luftwaffe Jets, Rockets And Secret Weapons Of World War Two
Cat No. SNA6515

‘Luftwaffe Jets of the Second World War’ traces the evolution of the early jet engines to the Heinkel He178 which first flew as early as 1939, the British Gloster experimental jet did not fly until as late as 1941. The German Luftwaffe was the first air force to boast operational jet fighters. ‘Project 1065’ from Messerschmitt started in 1938 and developed into the first operational jet, the Me262. In 1943 German fighter ace Adolf Galland flew the Me262 saying :”It was as if an angel was pushing him.” The Arado Ar234 Blitz or ‘Lightening’ became the world’s first Jet bomber. The most futuristic aircraft of the war was the German rocket propelled Me163 Komet; it was also the most dangerous! ‘Luftwaffe Jets of the Second World War’ looks in great detail at the highly complicated ritual of re-fuelling and re-arming the temperamental Me163 which took ‘a brave man to fly it!’ ‘Luftwaffe Rockets and Secret Weapons of the Second World War’ traces the evolution of Hitler’s terror weapons unleashed on Britain in a last desperate attempt to win the war in Europe., Between June 1944 and March 1945 the Luftwaffe fired The V-1 Flying Bomb pulse jet missile at south eastern England, London, Belgium and Antwerp. Because of its extraordinary sound it was nicknamed the ‘Buzz Bomb’ or ‘Doodlebug’. The V-1 would fly until its engine cut out then it would randomly dive towards the ground. British countermeasures were difficult as virtually the only aircraft that was fast enough to catch it was the Hawker Tempest. But Hitler’s second missile, the V-2, was altogether different. Travelling faster than the speed of sound the V-2 was the first ballistic missile. The Allies had no answer to the V-2! SPECIAL FEATURES: Oberth's High Altitude Rocket. (2 mins) , ‘Wasserfall' Archive Featurette. (2 mins), ‘The X-4’ Air to Air Rocket. (2 mins), ‘The Hs 298’ Air to Air Missile. (1 min), ‘Missiles, The Technological Breakthrough.’ - The history of American rocketry right up to the 1980’s. (17 mins)

Coastal Command 1936 - 1969: A Service Overview

 Coastal Command 1936 - 1969: A Service Overview
Cat No. SNA6520

Coastal Command : 1936 - 1969 : A Service Overview. From its inception in 1936, through the Second World War, the Berlin Airlift and the Cold War to its demise in 1969 - Coastal Command - A Service Overview, is the definitive film history of the 'Cinderella Service' as told through the eyes of four RAF Heroes. One of whom joined up in 1937 and had a massive crash in his huge Sunderland, which was ripped apart leaving him as one of the first men to be put back together at East Grinstead. Using news reviews and official RAF film records of the period, Coastal Command - A Service Overview surveys the seaplanes and flying boats, the missions and the men and women that that protected Britain’s sea lanes and shores from the Nazi onslaught and possible starvation for the British. In a later account about the boredom of long sorties in the Shackleton a pilot explained how he coped, ‘I spend one hour flying, one hour sleeping and one hour contemplating sexual matters!’. Aircraft featured include the Sunderland, B-17, Wellington, Blenheim, Mosquito, Anson, Catalina, Hudson, the very rare Lockheed Neptune and the Shackleton. This highly personal view of Coastal Command is directed by Bryan Wolfe, who was Capital Radio’s original ‘Flying Eye’ and the son of Battle of Britain pilot Winco ‘Ted’ Wolfe, C/O of 141 Squadron.

The Battle Of The Somme

 The Battle Of The Somme
Cat No. SN6540

The Battle of the Somme (1916) remains one of the most successful British films ever made. It is estimated over 20 million tickets were sold in Great Britain in the first two months of release, and the film was distributed world-wide to demonstrate to allies and neutrals Britain’s commitment to the First World War. It is the source of many of that conflict’s most iconic images. The Battle of the Somme gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare, controversially including the depiction of dead and wounded soldiers. It shows scenes of the build-up to the infantry offensive, including the massive preliminary bombardment, coverage of the first day of the battle -the bloodiest single day in Britain’s military history - and depictions of the small gains and massive costs of the attack. As a pioneering battlefield documentary, the very concept of The Battle of the Somme outraged commentators on its release, inaugurating a debate about the on-screen depiction of combat that continues to this day. Its use of a staged sequence to represent the opening of the assault also set the scene for continuing controversy about the ‘truth’ of documentary. The Battle of the Somme’s importance was recognised in 2005 by its formal inscription in the UNESCO ‘Memory Of The World’ register – the first British document of any kind to be included. CONTENTS • The Battle of the Somme – Full digital restoration, offering a startling improvement on previously released video versions. • The film is available with a choice of three soundtracks in both 5.1and Stereo options: 1. A newly commissioned orchestral score, composed by Laura Rossi and performed by The Philharmonia Orchestra, conductor Nic Raine.. 2. A recreation of the medley of light classics, folk tunes, popular songs and military music that was originally recommended as an accompaniment to the film on its first release in 1916, performed by a small ensemble led by Stephen Horne. 3. An audio commentary by Roger Smither, Keeper of the Imperial War Museum’s Film and Photograph Archives. • Extras 1. On-screen interviews with Roger Smither, Laura Rossi, Stephen Horne and Dr. Toby Haggith 2. Five missing scenes and fragments linked to their originally intended position in the film 3. Booklet with information on the film, its restoration and the two musical accompaniments 4. Weblink to downloadable viewing notes, music details, further reading and teaching resources.

Steam In The Sixties

 Steam In The Sixties
Cat No. SNA6550

Kenneth Oldham M.B.E. and his 16mm camera bore witness to a period of great change on British Railways that included the cessation of scheduled steam services. In this final decade, he filmed a great many working steam types including an impressive array of mainline steam express classes :- Ex-S.R. "Merchant Navy" and "West Country"/ "Battle Of Britain" Class Pacifics, B.R. Standard Class 7 "Britannia's", ex-LNER Gresley deisgned A1's, A3 "Pacifics" (including Flying Scotsman) and A4 "Pacifics" (including Mallard) as well as Black 5's, Green Arrow V2's and ex-Great Western Castles, Manors and Halls. Kenneth also filmed one-off rarities such as "Gordon Highlander" and the last operating 'single' - the Caledonian Railway "No.123". The official 'Steam Ban' provided the impetus for a flurry of privately organised steam-hauled rail tours. The Flying Scotsman was the locomotive of choice for a great many of those featured including the "Great Central Tour", the "Moorlands Special" and the "Pegler Pullman". Also covered are a great many other named tours, the highlights of which are "The Solway Ranger Rail Tour", "The Scottish Lowlander Tour", "The Three Summit Tour", "The Scarborough Limited" and the Gresley Society's "London North Eastern Flier" as well as many 'final runs' of specific loco classes and "Farewell To Steam" specials. Other points of interest include shots at the Dillicar water troughs and scenes on the now defunct Ripon to Northallerton line and the old North British Line at Silloth. Making this programme the definitive visual history of the last decade of mainline steam, many original newsreel stories are also interspersed within the chronology giving insights into locomotives such as the "Dominion Of Canada", "Stepney", "Clun Castle", "Evening Star" and "Invincible" - an industrial tank engine seen at work on the now dismantled Royal Aircraft Establishment railway line through the streets of Farnborough.

Hitchcock: The Wartime Resistance Films

 Hitchcock: The Wartime Resistance Films
Cat No. SNA6555

Aventure Malgache (1944, 30mins, French Language with English Sub-titles). A fictional French propaganda film made in England for the Ministry Of Information concerning the brief, heroic career of a Madagascan resister. Using the dressing-room discussion of three members of the Théâtre Molière as a frame, Hitchcock recounts the tale of Jean Michel, the villain of the piece, and of Clarus, the hero. After Pétain's historic broadcast in June 1940, the citizens of Madagascar gather to offer resistance, But Michel persuades them to await Pétain's orders, whereupon many leave the island by night. Clarus, an active resister, is betrayed and sentenced to life imprisonment. Michel attempts to make a deal with him, in order to discover the whereabouts of the resister's transmitter and their code. Clarus refuses. Clarus is eventually freed by a British ship and goes on to broadcast to Madagascan resisters. Newsreel footage is used to show the British liberation of the island - an event portrayed as uncomplicated and peaceful. Michel pragmatically replaces the Vichy paraphernalia in his office with pro-British objects. Bon Voyage (1944, 25mins, French Language with English Sub-Titles) RAF Sergeant Dougall tells a Free French Deuxième Bureau officer in London the story of his escape through France. A fellow escapee, Stephan, contacts the resistance in Rheims; the two are passed through various contacts to a farm where Dougall wins the only available place in a plane pick-up; the entire escape passes impressively smoothly. The officer surprises Dougall by knowing Stephan had asked Dougall to post a letter in London, and asks for the address; Dougall is reluctant to "break a confidence". The officer then reveals that 'Stephan' was in fact a Gestapo agent, willing to use a true escape (and, indeed, to kill a minor collaborationist Service d'Ordre Legionnaire agent) to establish credentials and so uncover real Resistance agents. Telling the other side of the escape, the officer finally reveals that Stephan himself shot the farmer's daughter (for whom Dougall felt some attraction). The Resistance is now in control again in France, but only Dougall knows the address of Stephan's London contact: he willingly hands it over. Bonus Feature : Hitchcock In The News (2008, 8mins) An impressionistic compilation of archive newsreels and interviews with the legendary film director.

Know Your Enemy: Nazi Germany

 Know Your Enemy: Nazi Germany
Cat No. SNA6560

Know Your Enemy - Nazi Germany (1941, 88 mins) is a set of four Army training films made for British troops as a prelude to their intended invasion of mainland Europe. The four identification films, from the archives of the Imperial War Museum, each focus on a specific area of threat showing graphically what weapons and munitions the British troops were up against :- German Equipment (Parts One And Two), German Aircraft, German Paratroops. Preparedness was everything in the face of the onslaught of German armoured cars, tanks, anti-tank guns, close-support guns, anti-tank guns, mountain guns and railway guns - all of which are featured with tactical suggestions as to their weakest points. There is even a warning about German Cycle Squadrons! The Luftwaffe is closely examined and comparisons made between British aircraft and their German counterparts including the Me-109, Me-110, Ju-87B, Ju-88, Ju-52, He-111 and the Do-17Z. This examination concludes with a massed bombing raid ove enemy territory, followed by the fighters and dive-bombers and then the parachutists and gliders; the message throughout being, "Think of the enemy above you!" Also included is a lesson in how to counter German paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger) and their equipment and a rather optimistic look at the British weapons that would be used in any counter-attack. For comparison, also included as bonus features are the American produced wartime documentaries made for their troops, 'Know Your Enemy - Japan' (1945, 64 mins) and 'Know Your Ally - Britain' (1943, 40 mins)

British Phantom Pilot

 British Phantom Pilot
Cat No. SNA6565

One of the most dramatic military jets of the Cold War period was the Mc Donnell- Douglas F-4 Phantom. In the 1960's it provided a much needed replacement for the Royal Navy's ageing Sea Vixens. With the cancellation of the P.1154 project, the British government became involved in discussions with McDonnell in St Louis on their proposal for a version of the F-4 Phantom suitable for the British Navy and the RAF. The first three Royal Navy Phantoms were finally delivered to Yeovilton on April 29, 1968 and 892 Squadron became 'carrier qualified' aboard the American carrier USS Saratoga in the autumn of 1969 with the Saratoga, suffering burnt and buckled deck platings from the higher thrust of the British Rolls Royce Spey engines! In the RAF the Phantom replaced the BAC Lightning. After an introductory overview of the history of the aircraft, three complete and previously unseen Phantom films are included in their entirety :- ‘Phantom Pilot’ (1973, 39 mins) made by Arnold Miller follows a pilot being trained on the Chipmonk basic trainer and follows him through all the stages Jet Provost, Folland Gnat, Hawker Hunter to becoming a Phantom Pilot. ‘Oversight’ (1976, 25 mins) was a training film made for the RAF, based on a true story of how through misunderstanding and bad practice RAF ground engineers made a fatal error and lost a Phantom. ‘Low Flying Training’ (1971, 23 mins) is an exciting 'low-level' look at how navigators were trained to fly ‘under the radar’ and pin-point their targets, sometimes with near disastrous results! Special Feature - 'F-4 Phantom USA' (2008, 13 mins) An impressionistic overview of the F-4 in American service including its famed role as a Vietnam ‘war horse’.

West End Jungle

 West End Jungle
Cat No. SNA6580

Banned on its original release in 1961, West End Jungle gives the definitive insight into the seedy reality and cunning artifice of the sex-workers of early 60's Soho. The Street Offences Act of 1959 cleared the "over painted harridan face of the West End" - the prostitutes - off the streets of Soho. Genuinely seedy and filmed in the private member's clubs, the 'actual places of vice' - that resulted from the change in the law, West End Jungle bears witness to the array of less than salubrious establishments that offered tawdry strip shows for audiences comprised of "bald heads and moist avid eyes". London railway termini are seen as the ideal locale for pimps to secure "ripe plums for the picking" - naive country girls who can be seduced into a life of vice. Within days, the "weak willed glamour-hungry bumpkins become skillful, heartless gold-diggers". The striptease clubs are a battlefield, the punters very much seen as 'mugs' to be reeled in by the "hostesses" for all the money they've got! West End Jungle paints a less than complimentary picture of the men who solicit sex workers in clubs which are little more than "high grade cattle markets", one hooker stating, "One of these days I'm going to burst out laughing in one of their stupid faces!" Shrewd businessmen are reduced to lecherous imbeciles in the company of two giggling working girls. Another man pays a tragically poor Marilyn Monroe look-a-like to 'model' for him "only to be entitled to 5 minutes of peering at a girl who needs a good wash".

F-14 Tomcat

 F-14 Tomcat
Cat No. SNA6595

The U.S. Navy's Grumman F-14 Tomcat was without equal among the Free World fighters of its time. Six long-range AIM-54A Phoenix missiles could be guided against six separate threat aircraft at long range. For medium-range combat, Sparrow missiles were carried with Sidewinders and a 20mm cannon available for dogfighting. The Tomcat's variable-sweep wings gave it a combat manoeuvring capability far in excess of a "standard" fixed wing aircraft. Designed in 1968 to take the place of the controversial F-111B, the F-14A used the Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines and AWG-9 system and carried the six Phoenix missiles originally intended for it. The F-14 boasted a completely new fighter system with an emphasis on close-in "claws" and stand-off missile fighting. From its first flight on 21 December 1970, the F-14A went through five years of development, evaluation, squadron training and initial carrier deployment to become the carrier air wings' most potent fighter. The Tomcat was the last of a long line of Grumman 'Cats' that provided the carrier task force with its first-line offence and defence against any enemy air threat. The Tomcat performed admirably during the conclusion of the Cold War in the Middle East, THE YugoslavIAN and First Gulf War conflicts. It flew its last combat missions supporting the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, with a final deployment at the start of the Iraq War in 2003. The F-14 WAS retired IN 2006 but its legacy is celebrated in F-14 Tomcat : The Last Of The 'Cats'. Bonus Features. Enduring Freedom outlines the initial assault on Afghanistan in the wake of 9-11, and the great demands that conflict made on those who fought. Iraqi Freedom outlines the initial thrust made by the Navy and American Marines in Iraq, and the great challenges they faced.

Aircraft Recognition For Royal Navy Gunners 1940

Aircraft Recognition For Royal Navy Gunners 1940
Cat No. SNA6640

AN OFFICIAL WARTIME ADMIRALTY TRAINING FILM - As shown to Second World War Royal Navy recruits! In 1940, the Royal Navy was patrolling the North Sea in readiness for the onslaught of the Luftwaffe, both to defend the homeland and counter-attack. As part of the training of naval crews, it was imperative that the split-second identification of aircraft as either 'friend or foe' had to become second nature. It was the difference between life and death. The films in this compilation are the authentic actual training films from 1940 that would have been part of the education of Royal Navy personnel. They are presented in the original sequence in unabridged form so that you can encounter them as through the eyes of trainee Naval Gunners in 1940. You will experience the very same instructional training films that gave a rookie his first taste of identifying the range of Axis and Allied aircraft that he might conceivably encounter in the early years of World War Two whether they be fighter, bomber or reconnaissance. Aircraft included : Spitfire, Hurricane, Blenheim, Defiant, Whitley, Wellington, Hampden, Anson, Hudson, Sunderland, Skua, Albacore, Swordfish, Walrus, Me109, Me110, Ju-86, Ju-87, Ju-88, Do-17, Do-18, He-111, He-114, He-115, Blohm and Voss. The release ends with an identification quiz in which you too can 'pit your wits' as if you were that young gunner of yesteryear!

The RAF Story: The 1930's - A Newsreel History

The RAF Story: The 1930's - A Newsreel History
Cat No. SNA6645

This DVD affords a very detailed look at the Royal Air Force through the eyes of newsreel cameramen throughout the thirties - a time of dramatic technological change in aircraft design. Rare footage from British Movietone News, Gaumont British News and the Pathe Gazette whisks us into the skies over the British Empire and beyond. The early thirties saw the Schneider Trophy won outright by the RAF and the air force also broke many long distance records all over the globe. The era covers the retirement of the ‘Father of the Royal Air Force’ - Lord Trenchard, the Coronation of King George VI and the long build-up to the Second World War. A rich variety of aircraft in the frontline included the Hawker Audax, the Hawker Hart, the Hawker Fury, the Gloster Gauntlet, the Bristol Bulldog, the Short Singapore III, the Boulton Paul Overstrand, the Vickers Wellesley and the Gloster Gladiator. We also see the birth of the Hawker Hurricane and early marks of the Supermarine Spitfire, the Westland Lysander, the Fairey Battle, the Bristol Blenheim, the Handley Page Hampden, the Vickers Wellington, the Avro Anson, the North American Harvard, the Lockheed Hudson, the Boulton Paul Defiant and many more. The 1930s saw early ‘mock battles’ in preparation for the air defence of London and many crashes! Concorde - 24 Hour World

 Concorde - 24 Hour World
Cat No. SNA6655

~ CONCORDE 24 HOUR WORLD (1973, 28 mins directed by John Costello and Terry Hughes) ~ Concorde, the head turning supersonic airliner only entered commercial service in January 1976 and although ‘Concorde 24 Hour World’ was made some years previous to that in 1973, it remains the definitive documentary to chart the optimism and weight of expectation this stunning aircraft carried. Its Anglo-French design and development was an enormous technological and logistical effort with the nose, tail and part of the fuselage being built in Bristol and its body and wings in Toulouse. The film focuses on Concorde 002, the British test aircraft that was to spend “most of its flying hours at the edge of the stratosphere” and which was “the most thoroughly tested civil aircraft ever”. Built to be tested to the limits, 002 was never to see public service. We see the test pilot John Cochrane in a pre-flight briefing, in the cockpit and this beautiful aircraft in stunning taxiing, take-off, air-to-air, descent and landing shots, as well as at various locations on its 1972 World Tour visiting places as diverse as Athens, Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo, India, Beirut and Iran in order to encourage vital orders from foreign airlines. ~ CONCORDE (1976, 21mins, directed by Arnold L. Miller) ~ Is a celebration of Concorde in the year it entered commercial service. This film shows Concorde in its early British Airways livery at Heathrow. We also get an insight into the construction process through scenes at the British Aircraft Corporation factory in Weybridge and Filton, and the unbelievably rigorous developmental testing procedures of the airframe at Farnborough, including the C.A.A. certification for rain. At Fairford we see the latest production Concorde undergoing testing and shots of early Concorde flight simulators, with a voice-over by John Cochrane. We see the pre-production Concorde 001 and the final shots of 002 at Fairford before its final flight to the Fleet Air Arm Museum where it remains as an exhibit to this day. DAY OF THE CONCORDE (1976, 14mins) ~ “The most beautiful aircraft ever to evolve from the mind of man”. Another film celebration of Concorde covering an early return proving flight from London Heathrow to Gander in Newfoundland. With an emphasis on the superb in-flight service and the ‘Concorde experience’ of the customer at 55,000 feet, flying at Mach 2 - twice the speed of sound. The success of the flight was a pre-cursor to a presentation of the CAA’s certificate of airworthiness and the celebrations surrounding the inaugural commercial flight to Bahrain on 21st January 1976 - the ‘Day Of The Concorde’. ~ DVD BONUS FEATURES SUPERSONIC HYPERSONIC FLIGHT (1962, 14mins) ~ This film shows early research into supersonic and hypersonic flight as it stood in the pioneering days of the early 1960’s. Military jets had already left the sound barrier behind and the next leap forward was to be the supersonic passenger airliner known as Concorde. Using laboratory scenes, wind tunnel tests and shots of the Handley Page 115 and BAC 221, a trio of scientists explain the aerodynamics of the ‘delta wing’ and the proposed "wave rider" air shapes and they demonstrate an experimental silicon nitrite metal strengthener before concluding with speculations as to the future development of hypersonic airframes. ~ CLIP FROM ‘EUROPEAN NEWS’ (1980, 1min) CLIP FROM ‘TEST PILOT’ (1972, 2 mins) ~ A silent take-off and landing sequence of the prototype Concorde followed by an interview with test pilot, John Cochrane. CONCORDE AT THE PARIS AIRSHOW (1968, 30 seconds) INTERVIEW WITH ARNOLD L. MILLER, DIRECTOR OF THE 1976 FILM ‘CONCORDE’ (2008, 3 mins)

Curse Of The Swastika

 Curse Of The Swastika
Cat No. SNA6673

The Curse of The Swastika’, a classic British Pathe documentary from 1940, illustrates the insidious rise of the Nazi Party from its post World War One origins through Adolf Hitler’s conniving to become the leader of the party and eventual dictator of his self-styled Third Reich. The twisted logic of scapegoating of the Jews, the development of the dreaded Nazi concentration camps, the construction of the Siegfried Line and the dynamic tensions and botched compromises of European inter-war politics that led to the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland before the eventual declaration of war with the invasion of Poland are all explored. The Battle of the River Plate in December 1939, the preparedness of French troops for the Battle For France and the sinking of the Graf Spee by Admiral Harwood and the British Navy feature heavily in this call to arms giving us a unique slant on the reasons for the start of the Second World War and The Curse of The Swastika.
