| | Five Minutes To Live Cat No. ORB10137
Originally released in 1961, as a crime drama. Fred (Tayback) narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. In his simple plan, he hires a hard-up hood, Johnny Cabot (Cash) to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage. Cabot will hold her until he gets a call alerting him that Fred has been successful in getting ransom money. Cabot waits, and watches the Wilson house as the husband (Woods) leaves for the bank and their young son (Howard) heads off to school. Posing as a door-to-door guitar instructor, he forces his way into the house and takes Nancy Wilson (Forrester) hostage. At the bank, Fred talks his way into Ken Wilson's office, and presents his personal check for $70,000, intending that Wilson will withdraw the funds to cover the check as a ransom for his wife. He has Wilson call home to prove that Nancy is being held by the unstable Cabot, and gives Wilson 5 minutes to make his decision. If Fred fails to call the house back, Cabot is to kill Nancy.

| | The Formula Cat No. HSC10089
This intriguing thriller is based on Steve Shagan's best-selling 1979 book of the same name. It begins in Germany, 1945, as the Third Reich realize that the end is at hand. A general is sent to Switzerland with a truckful of documents containing information on the German discovery of a formula for the manufacturing of synthetic fuel. He is intercepted by an American who believes the world will become one big corporation at the end of the war. The scene cuts to present day Los Angeles and the discovery of the dead body of Thomas Neely, an ex-police officer who has recently been dealing in cocaine. His friend, Lieutenant Barney Caine, is put on the case. Shortly after he talks to Neely's ex-wife, she is shot to death. Caine follows some clues and meets Adam Steiffel, the wealthy and shrewd head of an international oil cartel. Through a computer check, he finds out that Neely was the American officer who dealt with the German general. Caine leaves for Germany where he tracks down both the chemist who developed the formula and the scientist who headed the Nazi synthetic fuel program. A stunning German model related to the chemist serves as his translator. Caine's investigations reveal a conspiracy of mammoth proportions to keep the formula for synthetic oil off the market. The Formula is a fascinating yarn that raises interesting questions about business ethics and the moral bankruptcy of the very rich. George C. Scott's portrait of Caine as a driven and principled cop is top-notch. Marlon Brando's delineation as Adam Steiffel, an "ivory tower hoodlum," makes him a powerful adversary. Also featured are Marthe Keller, John Gielgud, G. D. Spradlin, and Beatrice Straight.

| | Ride In The Whirlwind (1965) Cat No. HSC10096
Filmed alongside Monte Hellman's 1966 classic, THE SHOOTING, RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND is another startling Western that defies genre conventions to tell a deeply sympathetic story about an innocent man who is forced into committing murder. Three desperadoes--Wes (Jack Nicholson), Vern (Cameron Mitchell), and Otis (Tom Filer)--become friendly with a group of outlaws who have just robbed a stagecoach (led by Harry Dean Stanton's ‘Blind Dick’). But the friendship leads to trouble when a band of roughnecks out to capture the thieves assume that the innocent men participated in the crime. Soon, Otis is dead, and Wes and Vern are running for their lives, hoping to escape the vengeful cowboys. They hide out in the home of Evan (George Mitchell) and Catherine (Katherine Squire), who have a beautiful 18-year-old daughter, Abigail (Millie Perkins). As the law closes in on the confused innocents, they must begin to think like guilty men, forcing Wes into committing a condemnable act that he will regret for the rest of his life--however long that may be. Scripted by Nicholson, Hellman's picture is a brilliant portrayal of innocence lost, featuring a remarkably subtle performance from the author-actor, as well as Mitchell.

| | The Shooting (1967) Cat No. HSC10097
Monte Hellman reinvents the Western genre with THE SHOOTING, a cryptic tale of revenge that has become an underground masterpiece of existentialism. The story follows Willett Gashade (Warren Oates), an ex-bounty hunter who returns home searching for his brother, only to discover that he has disappeared. He is met by Coley (Will Hutchins), a frazzled cowboy who is recovering from having witnessed the murder of his best friend. When a beautiful but tempestuous mystery woman (Millie Perkins) arrives, Gashade reluctantly agrees to escort her through the Utah desert. Along the way, Gashade begins to suspect that she is trailing someone, which is confirmed after Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson), a ruthless bounty hunter, joins the party. Unsure of their target, Gashade and Coley continue to inch forward, leery of Billy Spear’s menacing presence. When Gashade finally discovers the hunted victim, he is left stunned and bewildered. Hellman's subversive, enigmatic tale, shot concurrently with RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND, assures the director a place in Western history. Nicholson and Oates, who appear in almost all of Hellman’s early films, slip into their roles with the ease and smoothness that has turned them into acting legends, giving cinephiles yet another reason to call THE SHOOTING an unadulterated classic.

| | Hitchcock Double Bill Cat No. HSC10088
Rich & Strange - Mixing silent film techniques with the new element of sound - only one-fifth of the film offers dialogue - Rich And Strange tells the charming story of Fred Hill (Henry Kendall) and his wife, Emily (Joan Barry), a small-town British couple who inherit some money from a rich uncle and suddenly decide to take a world cruise. Both, however, find themselves out of their element, and their attempts at extramarital adventures fail miserably. Their newfound sophistication having backfired, the couple will have to try to return to good old England, but their journey will be full of mishaps and unexpected disaster. Released under the title East Of Shanghai in the United States, the film was based on the novel by Dale Collins and was a departure for Hitchcock in both style and tone. Young & Innocent - Former child star Nova Pilbeam - the kidnapping victim in 'The Man Who Knew Too Much', reappears in this light hearted and unpretentious mystery shot on location in Cornwall. Playing the daughter of a local constable, Pilbeam shelters a suspected murderer (Derrick DeMarney) and a charming romance develops. The highlight of this rare Hitchcock film is a stunningly intricate camera crane shot of the twitching eyes of the guilt-ridden killer: a jazz drummer in blackface. It took two days to shoot and is one of a continuous move lasting one minute and ten seconds focusing down from 145 feet to 4 inches
