| | Operation Valkerie Cat No. AR212D
On July 20th, 1944, a bomb, planted by the high-ranking German officer, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, exploded in the briefing room of Wolf's Lair, Adolf Hitler's Eastern Front HQ. Although the device was planted only a few feet away from the Fuhrer, he miraculously survived to wreak bloodthirsty vengeance on the whole German resistance movement. This is the story, horrific, tragic, but also at times almost comical of the most serious attempt to assassinate the warlord. This is the story of Operation Valkyrie, the plan to kill Hitler, which he himself had approved! Also included is an interview with Nigel Jones, author of the book 'Countdown to Valkyrie'. Nigel provides unique access to information known only to Stauffenberg's family.

| | Armoured Missions - Engines Of War Cat No. AR085D
The stalemate of trench warfare in World War I was finally broken by the tank and self-propelled gun, and Germany capitulated. These weapons came fully into their own in World War II, and combined with the tactics of Blitzkrieg, gave Germany early supremacy. Ground support aircraft such as the Stuka dive-bombers were used to devastating effect. The Soviet response to this combination was the T-34 tank whose 76 or 85mm gun could fire high explosive shells as well as amour piercing rounds. The British response, the Matilda tank, was not heavily armoured but found its role when fitted with a flamethrower. Both Britain and the United States used stop-gap measures, fitting 25-pounder field guns onto tank chassis' and hulls. Tank chassis' were also equipped with revolving drums and minesweepers, with mortars and with bridge-laying hydraulic arms. After the war, the role of helicopters and aircraft in armoured assaults became essential. The U.S. Army combined the use of these assault aircraft with the fire support of the M-109 self-propelled Howitzer. This is capable of firing nuclear shells over 15 miles. For saturation fire, NATO has developed the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), which in its 'smart' weapon form can penetrate the overhead armour of tanks using kinetic energy alone. There is literally no defence against it.

| | Armoured Missions - The Light Tank & Armoured Car Mission Cat No. AR103D
From the battlefields of Flanders onwards the ultimate ground weapon was the tank. Developed to break the deadlock of trench warfare nothing that preceded it could stand against it. In the 1930s Mussolini successfully used light tanks based on the British designs in Abyssinia, while Hitler combined armoured cars and light tanks in the invasion of Poland. The speed of the Panzer IIs enabled the Germans to run rings around their enemy in the invasion of France, and Rommel made good use of similar tanks in his desert victories. It was the Russians, however, with the T-26 who showed the value and variety of the missions a light tank could undertake. At the same time the American M-series combined superb handling characteristics with high speed and high ground clearance giving it access to a number of difficult terrains. Since the war, British light armour includes the Scorpion, which is essentially a light tank that can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. In Vietnam extensive use was made of a Cadillac Gauge design, the LAV-150 Commando armoured car and also, from the same company, the LAV-600 one of the most modern and potent light armoured vehicles. Despite sceptics, the future of the light armoured vehicle is assured.

| | Battlefield - Destination Okinawa Cat No. CROMDVD1111
The battle for Okinawa claimed more lives than any US campaign against Japan in the Pacific war. Situated between the Ryukyu group of islands north of Formosa and the Japanese home islands, it was chosen as the final springboard for the invasion of Japan itself that was for so long felt vital to bring the war to an end. The Japanese, under Lieutenant General Ushijima, fought for every inch of ground and had constructed a formidable series of defensive lines against the US invasion force. The fighting on the island itself was some of the most savage of the war, while at sea at 700-plane Kamikaze raid sank several US destroyers. The Japanese could not resist the US invasion assault force forever though, and despite seeing their commander General Buckner killed in action, had won victory by June 1945. US casualties were estimated to be 49,000. More than 110,000 Japanese were killed and 7,000 taken prisoner. Within weeks, the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had done their work, bringing the war to a sudden end.

| | Battlefield - The Battle For The Mediterranean Cat No. CROMDVD1112
The struggle for control in this vital theatre of World War II gave the conflict some of its most compelling and powerful stories. The great battles between the Italian Navy and Britain's Royal Navy dominated the seas during the early years of the war as both sides sought to support their land campaigns in Egypt and Africa. At the same time, Britain struggled to maintain its toehold on Malta, dubbed the 'unsinkable aircraft carrier'. This episode also explores the story of the war in Greece, which was invaded by the Italians in 1940, the Germans in 1941 and finally by the British in 1944. It looks at the constant fight against the German Luftwaffe, which arrived in the Mediterranean in1941 and did terrible damage to Allied shipping, resulting in the loss of bases in North Africa. The programme also delves into the fascinating story of 'Operation Mercury', the German invasion of Crete, the bloody battle which cost 10,000 lives and the story of the fight for the island of Sicily in 1943, which saw the miraculous evacuation of some 100,000 Axis troops.

| | Battleships Of World War Two Cat No. PGDV3BX025
~ DISC ONE - BATTLESHIPS AT WAR ~ The battleship reigned supreme in naval warfare from the start of this century to 1945 and, though only the Dardanelles and Jutland provided action in World War I, German rearmament ensured the heavily armed queen of the seas would play a major part in the second conflict. The Royal Navy won early successes: the mighty Graf Spee was scuttled off South America, while half of Raeder's fleet was destroyed at Narvik. U-Boats and air power posed a real threat to battleship superiority, as proved by British torpedo bombers at Taranto. Admiral Cunningham's fleet, led by HMS Warspite, ensured the Royal Navy's mastery of the Mediterranean, crushing Italy at Cape Matapan. Battleships later played a leading role in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and the D-Day landings as floating weapons platforms pounding shore-based enemy positions. The US Navy proved all-powerful in the Pacific, Leyte Gulf leaving the Japanese with only one surviving battleship. Fittingly, the final act of the war took place on USS Missouri as Japan signed the surrender. The Allies had secured ultimate victory - a triumph in which the battleship had played its part. ~ DISC TWO - GREAT GERMAN BATTLESHIPS OF WORLD WAR TWO ~ This fascinating DVD, using archive footage, stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen, concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War Two, including the big sea battles they encountered. ~ DISC THREE - KRIEGSMARINE ~ Adolf Hitler had promised his naval commanders that there would be no war in Europe before 1942. Accordingly, plans were laid for the best naval force in the world, but when Hitler precipitated the Second World War in 1939, only a fraction of the necessary ships and submarines were ready. At the outbreak of war Germany did not even possess a single aircraft carrier. The battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz fought famous actions at sea, but the Kriegsmarine was always on the back foot, crippled by superior opponents and strangled by bureaucratic neglect at home. This DVD features rare footage from the British and German archives of the men and ships of the Kriegsmarine in its brief heyday plus innovative maps and graphics, and new footage of the last resting place of the Tirpitz. It also includes computer animation and military analysis from Dr. Simon Trew and Tim Bean of The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

| | Churchill's War Cat No. PEGDVD1101
Winston Churchill succeeded to the highest office amidst turbulent and extraordinary events. In the early 1930s his powerful warnings about the dangers of Nazi fanaticism had been dismissed as alarmist, but by the time he became Prime Minister, on the afternoon of May 10th 1940, his grimmest forebodings had been proven all too true. Western Europe was a cauldron of war. German divisions poured effortlessly into Holland and Belgium and had begun turning for the French frontier. The prospects for Britain and her new war leader were inconceivably black. French intelligence estimated that Britain could withstand a German onslaught for no more than 3 weeks. Hitler's forces had enjoyed unbroken and astonishing success, leading the highest levels of power in Britain to believe that Hitler could not be beaten. Churchill alone never faltered, announcing to the British people that his aim was 'Victory - victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror; victory however long and hard the road may be'. Given the circumstances, it was an astonishing goal to set before the exhausted nation. What followed is now history, from the defeat of the mighty Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic against the U-Boats to the annihilation of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. It is easy now to criticise Churchill. Good commanders like Wavel were treated unfairly by him; the ill-fated convoy PQ17 set sail to disaster at the Prime Minister's insistence. These decisions were, at the time, far from simple and whatever Churchill's failings they are far outweighed by the splendour of his achievements. From the very outset he recognised the Nazi regime for what it was and fought it unswervingly. His masterful oratory not only inspired a nation but kept priceless hope alive in the hearts of millions enslaved on the Continent. In President Kennedy's words, 'Churchill took the English language to war'.

| | D-Day - Assault On Fortress Europe Cat No. PLEDVD001
Early in the morning of 6th June 1944, a vast and bizarre armada ploughed steadily against stiff head-winds through the rough waters of the English Channel, heading for the Normandy coast. Amongst the 5,000 vessels were many of the best British and American warships of stupendous collective firepower, as well as ancient battleships and tankers on their last voyage, destined to be sunk to provide breakwaters. Thousands of the craft had been built to make one short journey only; to ferry the invading allied forces, together with their immense diversity of equipment on the last difficult, dangerous stretch from the transports to the shore of enemy-occupied France. It was D-Day. Four years in the planning, two in the organising and one day in the execution, the landing in Normandy was easily the largest and most extraordinary combined military operation ever attempted. It was also a crucial one, had D-Day failed the Western Allies would have found it impossible to launch another operation for at least a year or more and today's map of Europe might have been very different. One of the millions taking part in the landings, Admiral Ramsay, was famous for his dislike of even the slightest exaggeration. As Operation Overlord got under way, he told his officers 'Gentlemen, I am sorry about all the superlatives, today they happen to be true'. Here is that story.

After the D-Day landings in June 1944, the Allied troops found themselves up against stiff German defensive positions. As a result of the desperate fighting which followed, the German Army was pushed back towards Paris, and the tide of the war was finally flowing in favour of the Allies. This programme tells the story of the mighty battle for the town of Caen, and of the shambles of "Operation Goodwood", one of the great British disasters of the Second World War. Featuring archive footage, informative maps and graphics, and an interview with the Rt Hon Viscount Montgomery of El Alamein CBE. Narrated by Michael Leighton. ~ WINST0N CHURCHILL - HIS FINEST HOUR - THE GREAT WARTIME SPEECHES FREE AUDIO CD - 12 SPEECHES - OVER AN HOUR OF AUDIO RECORDINGS ~ The words of the man who offered his nation "blood, toil, tears and sweat". | | Dive Bombers & Combat Aircraft Of WWII Cat No. AR006D
For many in the opening years of the Second World War, the vision of the menacing, gull-winged Stuka dive bomber, plunging vertically earthwards, its sirens wailing like banshees before releasing its bomb load, became the very embodiment of the terror created by the new form of 'Blitzkrieg' warfare unleashed on Europe by the German Wehrmacht in September, 1939. Designed to assist ground operations, the Stuka was always to be found operating with the leading elements of the army in France, North Africa, and Russia as 'flying artillery'. In this wide-ranging presentation the Stuka is seen in action on all fronts, as well as the HS-129s and FW-190 in action in Russia.

~ DISC ONE - GOOSE GREEN 1982 ~ The fight at Goose Green in May 1982 was the most famous battle of the Falklands War, which saw British and Argentine troops struggle for control of the Falkland Islands. In the wake of the shock Argentine invasion, Britain sent a hastily assembled Task Force to the South Atlantic charged with the job of restoring British sovereignty. The Argentine positions at Goose Green were thought to pose a threat to the British advance across the Islands and troops from the Parachute Regiment were sent to deal with it. After 12 hours of bloody fighting, the Argentine position was finally overrun and the British advance on the capital Port Stanley could continue. Moving pictures were beamed back to Britain of the aftermath of the battle, bringing home the stark realities of combat - a sobering reminder amid the political rhetoric and jingoism. ~ DISC TWO - THE FALKLANDS WAR ~ It is twenty five years since Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands. | | Fighter Aces Cat No. PEGDVD1158
In 1915 the armies of the Great War were locked in a stalemate of the trenches but a new form of combat would soon put an end to stationary battles - the aerial duel. Almost from its conception air-warfare captured the popular imagination, turning men into heroes, pilots into Fighter Aces. High above the trenches the courage and skill of men such as Baron Von Richthofen, Oswald Boelcke, Edward 'Mick' Mannock, Billy Bishop and Hermann Goering would make them legends in their own lifetime. During the Spanish Civil War a new generation of German Aces won its spurs, with the tactics and machines being perfected for the forthcoming 'Blitzkrieg'. Throughout the Battle of Britain the hastily trained fighter pilots of the RAF learnt tactics 'on the wing' against the Luftwaffe veterans of Spain. The heroisms and determination of the RAF Aces such as Joseph Frantichek and Ginger Lacey were all that stood between Britain and invasion. In Europe and North Africa the flying skills and tactical genius of men like Werner Moelders, Adolf Galland and Hans Marseilles won the respect of friend and foe alike. On the Eastern Front Erich Hartmann, the Ace of Aces won 352 victories, an astonishing achievement never equalled in the history of aerial combat. This DVD charts the history of aerial combat from the Great War to the dawn of the jet age using rare archive footage, much of which has been unavailable in the West since World War Two.

| | German Jets And V1 & V2 Flying Bombs Cat No. AR009D
The assumption that the RAF's long-range reconnaissance aircraft, the Mosquito, could continue to employ its high speed to range across Germany with impunity, was shattered on 25th July, 1944. A Mosquito, belonging to the No.544 squadron, barely escaped destruction after having been attacked in the first air-to-air encounter with the revolutionary new German fighter, the Messerschmitt Me-262. The Me-262 represented the cutting edge of a new generation of highly advanced combat types, employing jet and rocket propulsion. Paralleling these aircraft types in the spring of 1945 were the first of Hitler's revenge weapons, the V-1 Flying Bomb and the advanced V-2 Rocket, that were intended to turn the tide of the war.

| | German Night Flyers Cat No. AR005D
The concept of a long range, fast, heavy fighter or 'Zerstorer' (destroyer), lay close to the heart of Hermann Goering during the early years of the growth of the new German air force. The chosen design came out of the Messerschmitt stable, the first prototype of the BF-110 taking to the air in 1936. Although fast, the size of the BF-110 left it unable to dog-fight with the more nimble RAF fighters, and was revamped for further employment as a night-fighter, serving alongside other types, especially the Junkers JU-88, the Luftwaffe's premier type in the nocturnal battles with RAF Bomber Command. Using combat footage from all fronts and from film shot in the skies by night and day over Germany, this programme provides a dramatic account of the contribution made by the heavy fighters of the Luftwaffe in World War Two.

| | History Of War - Gettysburg Cat No. CROMDVD1056
The Story of Brandy station, the largest cavalry battle ever fought on American soil'. Gettysburg was the turning point of the American Civil War and is, perhaps, the most famous battle of that bloody and bitter conflict. However, only weeks before, the cavalry forces of North and South had met in what would prove to be the largest cavalry engagement of the war, the Battle of Brandy Station. This is the dramatic story of that crucial battle, a fight which would dispel the myth of the 'invincible' Confederate cavalry forever. This DVD features a magnificent reconstruction of the Battle of Brandy Station specially filmed in Virginia, the largest cavalry re-enactment ever staged in America. Also featuring superb dramatised 'eye-witness' accounts, computer generated 3D mapping techniques plus delightful period imagery and photographs; this programme provides an unforgettable record of a vital day in the American Civil War. Narrated by Bob Sessions. Featuring expert comment and analysis by Dr David Chandler, the world's foremost military historian and former Head of War Studies at Sandhurst.

| | The Holocaust - The Untold Story Cat No. PGDV3BX036
~ DISC ONE - GHETTO THERESIENSTADT ~ Between 1941 and 1945 the small fortress town of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia became a transit point to the death camps in the east for thousands of Czech, German, Austrian and Dutch Jews. All those deported to Theresienstadt were led to believe it was an "end camp" from which they would travel no further. They were promised a comfortable and peaceful life in the "Reich home for the aged" and were hoodwinked into signing over to the S.S. all of their properties and assets. In reality, many would be sent on to death camps such as Auschwitz. From 1943, following international concern, the Nazis developed Theresienstadt into a "show camp" a propaganda exercise designed to conceal from the outside world what was really happening to Europe's Jews. A large scale "beautification" programme swung into action, giving the camp a pleasant and respectable facade, a deception that succeeded in shielding the terrible truth. ~ DISC TWO THE YELLOW STAR ~ 'One hundred dead are a catastrophe; millions of dead are a statistic' The horrendous observations of Adolf Eichmann. This Oscar nominated documentary serves not only as a remembrance but a lesson and a warning for the future. It follows the plight of Europe's Jews during the terrifying period from 1933 until the final defeat of the Third Reich in 1945. Never before had the world seen such contempt for human life on such a grand scale, the murder of an estimated 6 million Jews, with countless others persecuted. During the 1930s a wave of national fervour swept through a tumultuous Germany; people looked for answers, and the politicians were all too willing to point the finger of blame towards the Jewish population. Few, if any, could have foreseen how the views of one man would unfoldthat man was Adolf Hitler. ~ DISC THREE - MAJDANEK ~ Discovered by Russian troops in July 1944 the Majdanek Nazi concentration and extermination camp near Lubin was the scene of some of Hitler's most disturbing handy work. Apart from using carbon monoxide, Majdanek was one of only two camps to use the deadly Zyklon B to poison victims in its gas chambers. In the hands of the Nazis, the efficient use of these chemicals would result in the extermination of a massive number of inmates. Majdanek was also unique among the death camps, in that Jewish prisoners did not form the overwhelming majority of its intake. Of the total inmates only 40% were Jewish, 35% Polish and the balance predominantly Belarusians, Ukrainians, Austrians, French, Russians, Italians and Dutch. This rare and stark documentary graphically portrays the methodical murder, starvation and torture of an estimated 2 million innocent victims and demonstrates the frightening efficiency of the German death camps. Also captured here on film are rare scenes from a Russian post-war tribunal, where survivors are seen giving evidence against captured SS officers and camp officials, this evidence was often to result in the conviction and execution of those standing accused.
