Dover: Gateway To Europe

 Dover: Gateway To Europe
Cat No. PEGDVD1299

This DVD provides a wonderfully unique behind-the-scenes look at the world's busiest ferry port, Dover. King James I granted Dover its Royal Charter in 1606, thus in 2006 we celebrated 400 years of that Charter bringing you bang up to date with an incredible and colourful insight into 21st century ferry operations. Dover is the closest point to Continental Europe with many ferry ships arriving and departing daily. P&O Ferries are the principle operator at the port and have 6 ferry vessels all operating the Dover to Calais route; other operators include Sea France, Norfolk Line, and Speed Ferries all of which can be seen in this fascinating and detailed programme. Whilst on dry land we examine dockside operations and enjoy a tour of the Dover Control Centre, before taking to the waves with a privileged view from the bridge of the Pride of Canterbury as she enters into port at Dover.

As the music from the dance-band drifts from the ballroom into the bracingnight air, strolling couples idle romantically by the ship's rails, gazing into the starlit night. The breeze from the great liner's quietly powerful onward motion ripples through their hair and elegant evening wear. This is the epitome of the age of the great liner, a time when comfort abounded and the upper classes revelled in outrageous luxury. Narrowboats - Holidaying On The Canals

Narrowboats - Holidaying On The Canals
Cat No. PEGDVD1198

When James Brindley designed and built his first canal in the 1760s to transport coal to Manchester, had someone told him that in the 21st Century people from all over the world would be taking their holidays on his 'Stinking Ditches' as his critics dubbed the canals, it's fair to say the brilliant young engineer would have laughed out loud! But this is precisely what has happened and today the British inland waterways are becoming an ever more popular holiday destination, as narrowboats transport visitors back in time, to experience a slower pace of life, while travelling through an unspoiled country landscape. Travel into the heart of Britain's waterways and see for yourself why narrowboat holidays have enjoyed such a revival, as the stressed and strained from every walk of life search for peace and tranquillity, relaxation and escapism. Follow the course of a narrowboat holiday from planning through to confident navigation and lock operation. See the sights, walk the towpaths and take a peek into the secret treasures of the canals and rivers of Britain. If you're planning a narrowboat holiday, you'll be inspired, but should you prefer to enjoy the experience from the comfort of your armchair, sit back and relax, welcome aboard.

Narrowboats - Working On The Canals

Narrowboats - Working On The Canals
Cat No. PEGDVD1196

For a brief spell in history 'canal mania' swept the land, but when the railways came steaming over the horizon, the canals were abandoned in favour of speed. Yet the canals survived on a reduced scale, and necessity proved to be the mother of invention. With reduced wages the boatmen were forced to take their families with them to live aboard the narrowboats, and a community of working canal folk took to the water. Follow this fascinating journey to discover what it was really like to work on the waterways of Britain. From the men who dug the canals and the great engineers responsible for their construction, through to the strong and resourceful boatmen, find out how they all played their part in keeping the wheels of the Industrial Revolution turning. In more recent years the canals have regained their popularity, but this time with holidays afloat. An entire leisure and tourism industry has developed that has ensured the restoration and conservation of the waterways for everyone to enjoy, bringing a whole new meaning to the term 'Working on the Canals'.

Southampton - Gateway To The World

Southampton - Gateway To The World
Cat No. PEGDVD1301

Southampton has always been regarded as the cruise ship capital of England, but it also plays a major part in the UK's export and import of commodities, and can also be considered as a gateway to the world. In this fascinating programme we bring to you unprecedented scenes of daily port action, including the towage of passenger cruise ships, liners, container ships and tankers. A look at the UK's second largest container terminal will see the unloading of containers by massive cranes and loaded onto trucks and straddle carriers. Join with us as we get up-close and personal to some of the largest ships in the world. See just how Southampton's tugboat crews operate their vessels together with the enormous size of our modern day ships, and witness the action as engineers grapple with bow and stern ropes to make safe the passage of ships into Southampton. Southampton has over the years played host to many new ships and has always welcomed them in style. Our cameras were there to record two very spectacular debuts. These were P&O Cruise's Ventura and Cunard's magnificent new ship the Queen Victoria. We also take you on board the Queen Victoria to see the splendour of her interior, and enjoy the pomp and pageantry as the Queen Victoria departs for her maiden voyage through a spectacular fireworks display. Staying with Cunard, history was made in April 2008 when Cunard's three serving ships were all seen together at the same time. Our cameras were there to record this historic event as it unfolded, and the scenes from our tugboat Svitzer Surrey are spectacular. Other spectacular scenes include Southampton's boat train, a visit to the VTS (vessel tracking services) facility, Southampton's grain terminal, and lots of tugboat action. This is truly a magnificent programme highlighting major maritime events from this historic port. This amazing production could also be seen as a promotional tool for shipping companies as it is both entertaining and education.
