Brunel's Great Britain

 Brunel's Great Britain
Cat No. DVDIV004

Brunel was undoubtedly a genius, but many of the projects he was involved with were dogged by bad luck. The SS Great Britain was no exception, yet nevertheless when she was launched in 1843 she was the largest and most advanced ship afloat having all the features of a modern passenger liner. During her first few years of service misfortune followed her, culminating in 1846 when she ran aground on the east coast of Ireland during a stormy night, with 180 passengers on board. She remained stranded for nearly a year but was saved from destruction by two ingenious ideas of Brunel. One to protect her from the weather while she remained aground on a very exposed coast, the second a remarkable method which he put forward to the Great Western Steamship Company for re-floating her. She was re-floated in August 1847 and was towed back to Liverpool where she was sold. From 1852 till 1876 she plied to and from Australia carrying passengers. Later she served as a cargo ship until she became stranded in the Falklands Islands in 1886 where she remained till 1970 when she was towed back to Bristol to be restored. Brunel's Great Britain follows the story of the ship from the formation of the Great Western Steamship Company, her first owner till the ship was brought back to Bristol in 1970. It is a fascinating tale, which spans 135 years.

100 Years Of Triumph

 100 Years Of Triumph
Cat No. DVDIV016

The Triumph story is now a hundred years old as the first motorcycle, known as No.1, found its way into the Triumph's catalogue in 1902. Since then of course an endless stream of famous models flowed off the lines at Priory Street, Meriden, and now Hinkley. Names such as the Trusty in 1914, the Ricky - a fast roadster brought out in 1922, and could reach a speed of 65mph, Horsman, Tiger, and the best motorcycle of all the pre war machines, the famous Speed Twin. All these names evoke in the imagination of those who know, on both sides of the Atlantic, a picture of power combined with that special Triumph individuality that all the machines had. During the war tragedy struck the factory which was destroyed when Hitler's airforce attacked Coventry. But from this disaster the most famous of all Triumph's works grew - the factory at Meriden. Although there was a long gap in production along with a crippling shortage of man power by the end of the war, Triumph still managed to produce nearly 50,000 machines for the military. After the war more famous names graced great new machines - Trophy, Thunderbird, and of course in 1959 the Bonneville, the engine of which owed a great deal to American racers. Other names such as Daytona and Trident also graced the roads of the USA, Britain and many other countries all around the world, but the Japanese influence started to take it's effect and Triumph sales dropped until the company ceased production. Also, sadly in an attempt by 'The Meriden Co-operative', with government help, also failed to keep Triumph afloat and in 1983 production of the last Bonneville at Meriden ceased when the receiver was called in. Now we come to the second part of the story. In 1983 John Bloor purchased the site at Meriden along with all rights to the name. Five years later, after lots of speculation and whispers in the industry, a press release finally announced that a whole new range of Triumphs would be manufactured from a new works in Hinckley. 1992 saw the end of the first full year of production during which nearly 5000 motorcycles had been produced, this figure has increased annually to reach over 30,000 today. So we reach 2002, a hundred years after No.1. was first advertised in the Triumph catalogue. Today, I feel quite sure that if we speculate on the future and look forward to 2102 I am confident that we shall still see on the roads magnificent machines graced with names such as Sprint, Tiger, Thunderbird, Trident, Daytona, and of course, Bonneville. Why not?

Classic Early Vintage Tractors - Pre 1930s

Classic Early Vintage Tractors - Pre 1930s
Cat No. DVDIV040

For those of you who enjoy looking at vintage tractors and seeing them in action, well, you are in for a treat when you watch this documentary. At the 2002 Great Dorset Steam Fair there was a sensational collection of pre 1930 tractors and in this programme we have selected some of the best at the show to feature in this video diary of the event. You will see tractors built by manufactures that are still in production today, but most were built by companies that didn`t survive the test of time - either by going out of business or being taken over by companies. Look out for the 1901 Ivel and the huge Case that would look more at home on the North American prairies than in the rolling countryside of Dorset. Also featured are tractors built by Hart-Parr, John Deere, Fordson, Minneapolis, Fiat, Caterpillar, Crawler, International, and there are two magnificent Rumley Oil Pull`s in the parade too, plus many more!

Classic Vintage And Veteran Motorcycles - Volume 1

Classic Vintage And Veteran Motorcycles - Volume 1
Cat No. DVDIV043

Towards the end of the nineteenth century many British manufacturing companies jumped onto a revolutionary, new and growing bandwagon that was to help more and more people travel short journeys easily and quickly. This was in the new pedal bicycle business. Then in 1896 a Coventry firm called Bayliss and Thomas fitted a Belgium Minerva engine to one of their bikes and the Excelsior was born; the first British motorcycle to grace our roads. But they were unable to hold the monopoly for long, for by the turn of the century dozens of other manufacturers followed their example and the British motorcycle industry was born. In the two volumes of this documentary you will be able to see and hear about many of the very early models produced between the wars and afterwards. Much of the video you will see of the earlier motorcycles are pictures of the last examples of their type. To list here all the motorcycles you will be able to see in the two volumes of this set would take up far too much space as there are well over a hundred classic models to look at. But, just to wet your appetite here are just a few: 1902 Excelsior. 1903 Kelly. 1904 Ormonde. 1906 Lloyd Thomas. 1904 Quadrant. 1910 Lincoln Elk. 1909 Brown. 1914 Royal Enfield. 1912 New Imperial. 1906 Imperial. Classic British Motorcycles - Vincent & Velocette

Classic British Motorcycles - Vincent & Velocette
Cat No. DVDIV074

Both the names Vincent and Velocette are synonymous with all that was great about British motorcycles during their heyday. HRD was originally founded by Howard R Davies in 1924, but slow sales forced him into voluntary liquidation in 1927. The company was bought the same year by Philip Vincent with support from his father and so the most well known and respected marque in British motorcycling history. Velocette was a family run company which after a shaky start built up a solid reputation mainly for its large capacity four stroke singles most of them being in traditional black and gold. Velocette was often ahead of its time which eventually proved to be its Achilles heel, for overspending on development costs which eventually crippled the company.

James 'PA' Norton, founded his company in 1898 making bicycle parts, producing his first motorcycle in 1902 - it looked like and ordinary pedal bicycle with a Clement engine and a petrol tank bolted on. Later, Norton also used Peugot engines before he used those of his own design. Throughout the history of the company Norton had a very competitive racing team taking many trophies and breaking many records, especially throughout the thirties and early fifties. Sadly the high-water mark of the company's success came after 'PA' Norton died in 1925 at the tragically young age of 56.

Classic, Vintage And Post War Cars

Classic, Vintage And Post War Cars
Cat No. DVDIV079

The British Motor Car Industry supplied hundreds of thousands of cars, to nearly every country in the world, for a large part of the last century. Even after the Second World War, British companies still retained twenty-five percent of the world market. We are not going to look at what went wrong here. Instead, in this programme we are going to look at some of the best British motor cars. Wonderful cars, that still survive today and are driven to shows all over the country where their proud owners can show them off, and others of us go green with envy. Cars today, to me, nearly all look the same, in vintage and post war days, each manufacturer had their own exclusive, and recognisable look, big or small, the cars then had style, class, some of them even had brakes all round! If you like looking at, and hearing about cars. This one is for you.

The World Of Heavy Haulage

 The World Of Heavy Haulage
Cat No. DVDIV090

Today we have a twenty-four hour haulage system in this country carrying everything we need to keep our businesses and households functioning - without it our society would grind to a holt within a few days. On our farms, horses and oxen have been replaced, firstly by traction engines then tractors, reducing the work force needed to feed the country from around fifty-percent to about five.In this documentary, while we look at a range of traction engines, steam buses, vans and lorries, plus heavy trucks, we will be examining the history of heavy haulage right back to 4000BC when wheels were first used to make carts.Hero, Leonardo da Vinci, Della Porta, Papin, Savery, Necomen, Cugnot, Trevithick and Thornycroft all made their contribution to the development of modern day agriculture equipment and transport. For many their only reward for their efforts was to die penniless.

Best Of British - The History Of MG
Cat No. DVDIV115

Cecil Kimber was the man behind MG convincing William Morris in the early 1920s to let him produce more stylish cars than was available at the time. At first he mounted Cowley chassis on special four-seater bodies, and these were sold as 'The Chummy' without too much success, but he soon got it right. At first Kimber's cars were sold as Morris Garages Specials before this was shortened to just MG. It only took a few years of Kimber producing his unique range of cars before in 1928 MG had its first stand at the motor show in Olympia exhibiting for one the 847cc over-head-cam Midget. In 1962 the most successful of all MG sports cars was introduced this was of course the spectacular MGB. In 1975 the millionth MG was produced. In 1979 while the MG staff were celebrating their 50th anniversary of building cars at the Abingdon works British Leyland Chairman Sir Michael Edwards announced that the decision had been made to axe MG sports car production. And this decision was announced publicly on 10th September 1979. Today, as I write this, I wonder if the MG badge will still grace cars in 2024 when MG should celebrate its centenary. I hope so it's too good a marquee to lose.

Cat No. DVDIV133

The Battlefield Line acquired its name after the track was relayed, by it present owners, back to Shenton Station which stands on part of the ground where the Battle of Bosworth was fought in 1845.The line was originally opened in 1873 and was known as the Ashby and Nuneaton joint Railway. Passengers traffic ceased as early as 1931 and the line finally closed altogether in 1970. The Shackerstone Railway Society was formed in 1969 and has gradually rebuilt part of the line in a southerly direction from Shackerstone reaching Shenton in 1992. Today on a visit to the line you can enjoy a pleasant ride through the Leicestershire countryside, there is plenty of rolling stock to look at, and the building are certainly worth a visit and at Shackerstone you will find a well stocked museum. In this programme while visiting the line, we recall in brief the history of the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway and the Shackerstone Railway Society.

Classic Buses And Coaches - Their Places In History

Classic Buses And Coaches - Their Places In History
Cat No. DVDIV135

In this documentary while looking at steam, petrol and diesel driven buses and coaches, we also examine their place in history. At first the all powerful railway companies didn't fear the growth of the road transport, they looked upon the humble buss as just a feeder for their stations from where any long distance journey would be taken by train. How wrong they were to be so complacent. Throughout their history bus and coach companies have been subject to government interference. They've been nationalised, privatised, deregulated, subsided and franchised, but there are still many companies in business.

D-DAY Remembered - D-DAY Remembered Part 1, 2 & 3

 D-DAY Remembered - D-DAY Remembered Part 1, 2 & 3
Cat No. DVDIV145T

Featuring...(Planning-Waiting-Go - Part One) - Getting into the third year of the war, 1942, the Americans wished to invade France but the British were not convinced that this was a viable proposition. After a lot of deliberation they found a compromise. First, North Africa was invaded, shortly followed by Sicily, then Italy in the hope that this would throw the Germans off balance. This was a successful ploy, as the German's didn't know where the Allies would invade next: Norway, Denmark, Northern or Southern France, Portugal, or the Balkans. German divisions in the West were spread too thinly to cover all these possible invasion sites. The Germans were expecting, convinced by Allied intelligence, that if the invasion was to be Northern France it would take place at the Pas de Calais. So, when the invasion forces landed at Normandy the Germans were completely surprised, and by the time the Germans released their Panser reserves it was just too late... - (The Planning Begin - Part Two) - American airborne divisions the 82nd and the 101st landed on the Cotentin peninsular protecting the right flank of the American landing beaches Utah and Omaha. Utah was a walk over for the Americans, however Omaha turned out to be a blood bath as wave after wave of troops were mown down as they landed. Only American grit kept them pushing forward until eventually the beach was secure. - (A Foothold Is Gained - Part Three) - Part Three completes the story of the American Landings and covers the British, Canadian and other Allies landing on Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. First to land in the east was the 6th British airborne who landed on the Eastern end of the attack to defend the flank of the beaches, at the same time destroying batteries and bridges while holding others. By D-Day plus 1 the Allies had not achieved many of their D-Day objectives, but they had gained a foothold strong enough to guarantee the freedom of Europe. D-Day was the longest day for many, for other it was their last. This is their story...
