Alcatraz - Defying The Rock

 Alcatraz - Defying The Rock
Cat No. PEGDVD1324

Rising through the dense fog lying like a blanket on San Francisco Bay, appears the silhouette of an icon of penal incarceration - The Rock. At the time of its construction Alcatraz was considered the most escape proof prison in America and a more than adequate solution to the alarming rise in organised criminal activity and violent crime which had blighted the nation. Heavily armed guards, tool-proof bars and shark-infested waters did little however to prevent some of her more creative inmates from attempting the seemingly impossible - to escape from Alcatraz Island. Join us as we examine some of the 'breaks-for-freedom'; the plans behind the attempts and determine if anyone was ever successful in defying The Rock.

The English Frontier & The American Revolution

The English Frontier & The American Revolution
Cat No. CROMDVD1225

This DVD features two episodes from the entertaining and educational series 'America: Discovery To Revolution' and examines the birth of the most powerful nation on Earth. 'The English Frontier & The American Revolution' examines the fractious relationship between the governing British rulers and the colonials who were demanding independence. The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first direct tax on the colonies and the flashpoint which lead to the American War of Independence, as many believed there should be no taxation without representation. Victory saw an end to British rule but it also signalled the start of a bloody chapter in American history.

Cat No. CROMDVD1224

This DVD features two episodes from the entertaining and educational series 'America: Discovery To Revolution' and examines the birth of the most powerful nation on Earth. 'The Pilgrim Frontier & The Dutch Frontier' looks at the plight of the early settlers and the huge part religious beliefs, or lack there of, played in the first formative years of this great nation. With religious persecution rife across Europe, many saw the New World as a fresh start - a place to exercise their personal philosophies free from prejudice. Far from finding Utopia, the New World offered up some cruel realities for the newcomers including hostile natives, harsh terrain and competing settlers from other nations.

The Berlin Wall - Escape To Freedom

The Berlin Wall - Escape To Freedom
Cat No. PEGDVD1325

A tyrannical regime builds a monstrous concrete slab that severs a city - the Berlin Wall. On the Western side, it's a hated symbol of a bitter Cold War, on the East, a deadly blockade to freedom. The Berlin Wall: Escape To Freedom reveals the stories of courageous East Germans who dared to challenge the authorities and the Berlin Wall in their bid for freedom. From tunnelling under the Wall, to smuggling refugees in a car's trunk, to flights over the Wall, uncover the details of sensational escape stories. It takes us into the heart of the Death Strip - a lethal zone next to a Wall filled with barbed wire, mines, attack dogs, tank traps, and armed guards - and shows us how authorities learned from each escape to make the Wall stronger and harder to beat. Finally, the Wall that was strengthened over 28 years was breached in one unbelievable night, while signs of the divisions of generations past still lingers on today.

Burmas Open Road

 Burmas Open Road
Cat No. PEGDVD1334

A fascinating insight into how Burma's future may be affected if its government takes the major decision to allow the building of a road through its lands to create a direct link between China and India. On a positive note, the building of the road will provide work for its people and allow easy access for tourism to Burma's wildlife reservations and ensure long-term economic stability for the country. On a negative note, it is seen as an environmental disaster waiting to happen, as untouched jungle is cut down to make way for the road. It could also potentially sound the death knell for many of the country's ancient traditions, cultures and wildlife that have so far remained untroubled by the outside world. Burma's geographical standing between China and India, two of the world's fastest growing economies, provides a corridor of trade that is too financially important to ignore with potential trade worth billions of dollars crossing its borders annually. The arguments for and against are simple: modernisation vs. preservation.

Columbus' Lost Ships

 Columbus' Lost Ships
Cat No. PEGDVD1326

Treasure hunters and scientists have for many years been looking for a shipwreck dating back to the time of the discovery of the Americas. Now they think it's been found just off the Panamanian coast. A wreck located at a depth of only a few metres, prompted American expert of Iberian shipbuilding, Professor Filipe Castro to say 'this is the oldest wreck ever discovered off the coast of the Americas'. Finds of cannons, wreckage and fragments support the theory that the wreck is of Spanish origin, which dates back to around the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th century. This film traces the route of Columbus' fourth voyage to the Caribbean, which ended in disaster for him and his fleet. The contemporary diving expedition to the shipwreck, the scientific investigation of the ship and the story of the fourth voyage are all woven together throughout the fabric of this programme.

 Conquest Of Everest: Revisited 1953-2003
Cat No. PEGDVD1122

What drove the men who risked and lost their lives to conquer the world's highest mountain for Britain? Fifty years on, Penny Mallory, whose ancestor, George Leigh Mallory lost his life, tells the story of this extra-ordinary adventure, undertaken with primitive equipment in often terrifying weather conditions against an unstable, brooding and often lethal adversary - Mount Everest. Did Mallory in fact reach the summit 29 years before Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay? Mallory's frozen body was found in 1999. Using authentic footage of the ascent we revisit this unique adventure fifty years on, alongside the men who pitted their wits and lives for the privilege of being the first to say that they had stood on the roof of the world. Which of us could have climbed, persevered and ultimately stood beside them beneath the Union Jack on that glorious sun-drenched May morning in 1953? The DVD also features biographies of the expedition's members and a chronology of those other brave men and women who have lost their lives on subsequent dashes for the summit.

Emperor Of The Seas

 Emperor Of The Seas
Cat No. PEGDVD1327

In July 1405, the Ming Emperor Yongle gave Zheng He command of the greatest armada the world has ever seen. His brief was to travel to the Western Ocean with some 300 ships and persuade the rulers of far flung lands to pay homage to the Emperor as the 'Son of Heaven'. There has been much debate as to the size of these treasure ships, and this film investigates the truth behind the claims. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven vast expeditions to kingdoms as far afield as India, the Middle East and Africa, covering 25,000 miles of ocean. It is believed that a few years after his death, Chinese officials destroyed all records of the treasure ship voyages, and China was to then turn its back on the outside world. Now, six centuries later, the truth about Zheng He's story is being pieced together from what few scraps of evidence still remain. Who was this extraordinary man who led an armada half way around the world decades before Columbus was to set sail for the Americas?

Fire And Fever

 Fire And Fever
Cat No. CROMDVD1089

The 17th Century saw London rocked to its foundations by a double disaster. Hardly had the victims of the previous year's Great Plague been buried when the Great Fire of September 1666 destroyed five-sixths of the city. In just four days the blaze had rendered 100,000 Londoners homeless, a major tragedy following the earlier epidemic's huge death toll. This DVD graphically charts these catastrophic events and their aftermath with the help of contemporary illustrations and dramatic 'eyewitness' accounts.

George Eliot

 George Eliot
Cat No. AR129D

George Eliot, author of 'Adam Bede', 'The Mill on the Floss', 'Silas Marner', 'Middlemarch' and 'Daniel Deronda', achieved mass popularity (Queen Victoria was among her readership), and was acclaimed by her literary contemporaries, including Tolstoy and Henry James. In contrast, Marian Evans flouted Victorian conventions by living with a man she was unable to marry, and by ceasing to attend church. She was refused entry to Victorian society, she was virtually banished by her family, and she never again saw the countryside of her youth. This programme tells the story of Marian Evans, from her pious Midland childhood, through her development into an independent minded academic, before emerging as the novelist George Eliot. She transformed the novel from a form of entertainment, to a social critique incorporating serious moral judgements and faithful representations of commonplace things.

The choices made by Robert Falcon Scott before and during his race across Antarctica are as much debated today as they were in that fateful year of 1912.  The Great Adventurers - Sir Francis Drake: The Scourage Of The Spanish
Cat No. CROMDVD1162

A large thorn in the Spanish side, Sir Francis Drake proved an illusive foe in the latter half of the 16th Century. As empires and kingdoms expanded so the race for the dominance of sea lanes became an essential goal as gold, jewels and other goods required safe passage. Betrayed by the Spanish at an early age, Drake would never again trust the word of a Spaniard, and made it his life's mission to cause havoc, plunder and seek revenge, culminating is the destruction of the 1588 Armada. Including footage shot onboard a seagoing replica of the Golden Hind, this DVD maps the life of Drake from his first journey as a master and commander, to his famous victory over the Spanish in 1588. Like his contemporary Sir Francis Drake, Raleigh held a contempt and loathing for the Spanish that he possessed from an early age. Unlike Drake however, Raleigh found himself deeply embroiled in court and royal politics that would ultimately restrict his ability for travel, exploration and adventure. A believer in the legend of El Dorado, Raleigh repeatedly travelled to South America in a bid for colonisation for his queen, trade routes for his country, and untold riches and fame for himself. Cat No. CROMDVD1197

Few kings in English history deserve the epithet 'great' more than Alfred, King of Wessex. In an age and country blighted by Viking invasions, Alfred inflicted repeated defeats upon the Norsemen and set about administrating the Danelaw to secure the unity of England. The great king also organised his forces into a standing army and built a recognised navy. Alfred was not only a fine warrior but was also a deeply religious man, a scholar and lawmaker. Featuring superb atmospheric dramatised reconstructions, surviving period imagery and 'eye-witness' reports, this programme provides a unique account of the life of one of England's truly great monarchs. A deeply religious man, Charles I believed unquestionably in the 'Divine Right of Kings', that he was answerable to God and God alone. This view was deemed archaic and an attempt by the King to gain absolute power in England. His attempts to placate Parliament would throw England into civil war. The final years of the reign of Charles I saw England in a state of religious and political upheaval, arguably a direct result of his duplicity and procrastinating. Narrated by Michael Leighton

Whether in reference to his famous ship or in memory of his many triumphs, Horatio Nelson lived a charmed existence upon the waves. His life on dry land, however, was to prove less 'victorious' and far more controversial as his personal dealings became something of a scandal. A married man, yet openly flaunting his affair with Lady Emma Hamilton, wife of Lord Hamilton, Nelson caused outrage in both London society and within the higher echelons of the navy. Divorced, beheaded, died; Divorced, beheaded, survived' - This children's rhyme accurately depicts the sometimes gruesome outcome of Henry VIII's six wives, and is a catchy reminder of how a king at the height of his power manipulated the law for his own gratification. The iconic figure of Henry VIII conjures images of opulence and excess but also of a man with a vicious cruel streak that would send two of his wives to the executioner. However, as this DVD shows, he was also a caring and loving husband desperate for a male heir..desperate enough to kill. Narrated by Terry Molloy

Born in 1412, Joan of Arc - famous forever as the Maid of Orleans - was arguably one of the most remarkable women ever to grace the pages of history. Although Joan was born to well-off peasant folk, she had no formal education; but at the age of thirteen she heard her 'voices' for the first time - voices she believed belonged to St Michael and St. Catherine, telling her to rescue the Paris region from English domination. And that's what the incredible teenage girl did; clad in armour at the head of a French army of resistance, she ejected the English from Orleans and had Charles VII crowned in Reims Cathedral. Kings And Queens Of England - Modern Monarchy

Kings And Queens Of England - Modern Monarchy
Cat No. CROMDVD1099

We begin our look at the Modern Monarchy with the longest ruling royal in British history; Queen Victoria. From her accession to the throne in 1837 to her death in 1901 Victoria was to reign for 64 years. In contrast, Edward VII her successor, was to be king for only 10 years; a reign that led up to the current House of Windsor. The first of the Windsor's; George V, despite being a German prince was to be monarch throughout the First World War and up to his eventual death in 1936 at the age of 70. 1936 was to see his son and successor Edward VIII abdicated as a result of his love for divorcee Wallace Simpson, in his place his brother Albert was crowned George VI. Albert was the first royal to marry a commoner since Henry VIII, she was later to be known to us as the ever popular; Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. In 1952 her daughter Elizabeth II was crowned Queen and she still remains to this day. Although the days of the British Empire are long gone and Britain can no longer be referred to as 'Great', here you have an informative record of a period which experienced huge political and social reform and one which took us through two World Wars. In addition to the expert analysis and presentation by Alan Ereira, this programme is complimented with atmospheric re-enactments throughout.

From George I to the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837; the Hanoverians span a period of 123 years. A fairly stable period with five kings, one of whom, (George III) was to be the longest reigning king in British history. We start our visit in 1714, with a German who is 52nd in line to the throne and who became monarch without being able to speak a single word of English! 1727 sees George II come to the thrown; his reign was to last until 1760 when George III's 60 year rule began. George IV was crowned in 1820 followed ten years later by the last of the Hanoverians William IV. Here also was a period of great political reform, which amongst other things saw the election of Britain's first Prime Minister; Robert Walpole and the introduction of Income Tax. It was a time that despite the loss of the American colonies saw the British Empire cover a third of the globe. Kings And Queens Of England - The Middle Ages

Kings And Queens Of England - The Middle Ages
Cat No. CROMDVD1095

We begin the Middle Ages programme with a monarch much ignored by history; King Louis. Short-lived though his reign may be, Louis ruled England in the months between the death of King John and the coronation of Henry III in 1216. The next 183 years were to become known as the Plantagenet period and in addition to Henry III they would be ruled by Edward I, Edward II, Edward III and Richard II. In 1399 Henry IV came to the throne, he was the first of the Lancastrians; the remaining two being Henry V and Henry VI, who between them ruled until 1461. Although historically the Yorkists ruled from 1461 to 1485, Henry VI was temporarily restored to the throne in 1470 only to be deposed again in 1471. See here in great detail how events unfolded during this period of real turmoil; enjoy the atmospheric re-enactments and the expert analysis from Alan Ereira.

Kings And Queens Of England - The Stuarts

Kings And Queens Of England - The Stuarts
Cat No. CROMDVD1097

With the death of Elizabeth I, 1603 heralded the beginning of the Stuarts; a royal house that was to last for over one hundred years. Here was a period that would see amongst other events; civil war, a great plague, the fire of London, the abolition and re-introduction of the monarchy and the gunpowder plot. James I and Charles I ruled until 1649 when Parliament took over during an eleven year period which came to be known as the Commonwealth and Protectorate. The monarchy was finally restored in 1660 with the crowning of Charles II, he was followed by James II, William III and Mary II and finally in 1702 by Queen Anne. 1714 brought England a new royal line with the coronation of George I and so ended another turbulent chapter of England's royal history. With expert analysis from Alan Ereira and atmospheric period reconstructions this programme is an interesting and informative record of the Stuart years.

Kings And Queens Of England - The Tudors

Kings And Queens Of England - The Tudors
Cat No. CROMDVD1096

Although the Tudors reigned from 1485 - 1603 our story begins much earlier, in the year of 1461 with a character called Owen Tudor. Owen was the source from which the Tudor dynasty would eventually spring. 1461 - 1485 saw the Yorkists Edward IV, Edward V and Richard III on the throne, until in 1485 the Tudor reign began with Henry VII. Henry VII was followed in the year 1509 by probably the most famous of all the Tudor monarchs Henry VIII, who with his six wives takes a very colourful place in history. Then came Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, along with Lady Jane Grey (the nine day queen) who historically gets very little mention. All in all, the Tudor period was one of intrigue and passionate affairs, one that even today can still capture the imagination. Re-enactments and in-depth expert analysis of the Tudor period by Alan Ereira add to the enjoyment of this historical insight.

The Roman Empire was the first great empire in Europe. Though established by military conquest, the Empire's provinces were offered the benefits of Roman civilisation. Many conquered Europeans however, refused the offer - they preferred their freedom, their own way of life, and were willing to fight and die for them. None of the lands they conquered gave the Romans as much trouble as Palestine. Their head-on clash with its Jewish inhabitants was the stuff of great drama. For the Jews it ended in tragedy... For the Romans, it was a salutary lesson in how fiercely their dominance could be defied.

Cat No. PEGDVD1330

For thousands of years the Strait of Malacca has been one of the world's busiest trade and shipping routes. By cutting through the strait, ships save 1,000 miles and three days sailing off the voyage between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, but it can be a hazardous shortcut. Every day 600 ships crowd into a 500 mile long channel that at times narrows to just 11 miles. With 20% of the world's oil passing through it, thousands of the world's wealthiest tourists and untold millions of dollars of commercial goods, the strait is a magnet for smugglers, illicit traders and pirates. This documentary examines the tools and tactics used in the battle to defeat them, one in particular a high-speed pursuit boat that's capable of chasing down its targets through the maze of small islands and mangrove swamps that pepper the strait. Also included here is filming with the police's specially equipped and trained anti-piracy commando unit. By utilising the latest in spy-ware and infra-red cameras, this programme literally takes us into the front line in their fight against crime.

This is the story of the late nineteenth century movement, whose goal was to win voting rights for women. Headed by the redoubtable Emmeline Pankhurst, women who fought for the movement and in some cases died for the right to vote, became known as the Suffragettes. Mrs Pankhurst herself was imprisoned on several occasions in pursuit of the cause, which was eventually won in 1917 when the British Government condescended to allow certain women the vote. Demonstrations, imprisonments, force-feedings and public violence surrounded the movement which sought to give women a voice. His name, image and adventures stir something in all of us - a time of chivalrous deeds, damsels in distress and gallant quests. King Arthur is the archetypal hero, a shining light from an age whose romance and myth still casts a spell over all who show a flicker of interest in his enduring legend. However, when we look for historical facts Arthur and his legend are shrouded in mystery and darkness, with little to no hard proof ever such a man existed. In the absence of concrete evidence, history and fantasy have fused together and in this DVD we attempted to separate fact from fiction with the expert opinion of historians and renowned Arthurian authorities.

The Arthurian Legends - Merlin

 The Arthurian Legends - Merlin
Cat No. CROMDVD1237

A tall pointy hat, long grey bread and flowing robes are the trademarks of what most envisage the benevolent and worldly wizard Merlin to have been like. With an eager young Arthur by his side, Merlin has taken on the guise of teacher, advisor and father figure to the young King but history paints the mysterious sorcerer in much murkier colours. Ironically, there is more evidence to support the existence of Merlin than there is for Arthur, but the evidence points to a holy man from demonic parentage or a wild man of the woods rather than a kindly old magician. Using new evidence, historical text and expert analysis this DVD attempts to separate myth from reality and identify the true origins and life of the most famous of wizards.

The Great Adventurers

 The Great Adventurers
Cat No. PGDV3BX044

~ DISC ONE - CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ~ Christopher Columbus would become known to history as the man who discovered the New World, and the story of how he accomplished his momentous feat is a tale of disappointment, exploitation, gold-fever and courage. Aboard the Santa Maria searching west in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, Columbus would discover a remarkable series of islands, but would also leave a legacy which is still seen today. Expert analysis, extensive period imagery and dramatised re-enactments tell the story of one of the greatest discoveries in history. Narrated by Roy Cane. ~ DISC TWO - SIR FRANCIS DRAKE ~ A large thorn in the Spanish side, Sir Francis Drake proved an illusive foe in the latter half of the 16th Century. As empires and kingdoms expanded so the race for the dominance of sea lanes became an essential goal as gold, jewels and other goods required safe passage. Betrayed by the Spanish at an early age, Drake would never again trust the word of a Spaniard, and made it his lifes mission to cause havoc, plunder and seek revenge, culminating is the destruction of the 1588 Armada. Including footage shot onboard a seagoing replica of the Golden Hind, this DVD maps the life of Drake from his first journey as a master and commander, to his famous victory over the Spanish in 1588. Narrated by Michael Leighton. ~ DISC THREE - SIR WALTER RALEIGH ~ Like his contemporary Sir Francis Drake, Raleigh held a contempt and loathing for the Spanish that he possessed from an early age. Dramatised eye-witness accounts, reconstructions and period imagery help to convey the tale of one of Englands greatest heroes. Narrated by Michael Leighton.

George Armstrong Custer is one of military history's most colourful characters, a flamboyant and dashing commander. It is said that 'cometh the hour, cometh the man' and Custer's appearance on the battlefields of American in the mid-1800s fits this perfectly. A failure at West Point, he made his name fighting the Federal Cavalry during the American Civil War where he earned his nickname 'the boy general'. The dashing and ambitious Custer often flouted military convention, placing his trust instead in his famous 'luck' which, unfortunately for him, ran out during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The futility and the madness of the First World War was the spur for some of the greatest, most moving poetry ever written. The young men who brought the voice of reason to the slaughter of the Great War were themselves part of a long tradition of war poetry stretching back to the very dawn of time. Introduced and narrated by Brian Blessed, 'The War Poets' traces the development of the art of war poetry from Anglo Saxon times to the nightmare of the trenches. Using extensive film footage and dozens of contemporary images, this DVD brings new vitality to the chequered tales of heroism, cowardice, luck, valour and misery which together form the experiences of war over the centuries. Jesse Woodson James claimed that like Robin Hood, he robbed the rich to feed the poor. There were some in his own time and since who believed him, and who saw him as a freedom fighter rather than a terrorist outlaw. Many did not. Brought up in a slave-owning family, Clay County where James lived sympathised with the Confederate cause. James Joyce's Dublin - The Ulysses Tour

James Joyce's Dublin - The Ulysses Tour
Cat No. AR244D

First published in 1922, 'Ulysses' was the piece of work that made the name of its author, James Joyce. Its publication was seen to expand the domain of permissible subjects in fiction. A remarkably ambitious novel, a labyrinthine work of great humor and technical accomplishment, it once was denounced as obscene, occasionally was accused of being unreadable and is now generally acclaimed as being the greatest book of the 20th Century. Although he spent most of his adult life outside of Ireland, Joyce's fictional universe was firmly rooted in Dublin, providing him with both setting and subject matter. In 'James Joyce's Dublin: The Ulysses Tour', Robert Nicholson, curator of the James Joyce Museum, Sandycove, conducts us through Joyce's world, with great enthusiasm and an irreverent sensibility that Joyce would surely have relished. Whilst allowing himself a couple of very Irish digs at the great man, he shares his admiration for the writer with us, together with his love of the novel and the city that gave birth to it, in a manner that is entirely captivating.

Geoffrey Chaucer And The Canterbury Tales

Geoffrey Chaucer And The Canterbury Tales
Cat No. AR245D

Known as the father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer's literary eminence was achieved despite having lived in one of the most troubled centuries the world has known, and one particularly fraught for England. Chaucer may have suffered accordingly. It has been proposed that he was murdered! He was born as England had entered into a war of conquest which was to last over 100 years, he survived the Black Death, and would witness the first revolutionary rising to challenge the status quo to date. He would be a soldier, a prisoner, a spy, a top civil servant, and a courtier. Throughout and despite all this, he would lead what was a brief golden age of English literature. Ultimately, he may have fallen foul of an English Inquisition. Monty Python's Terry Jones, writer, film director, actor and historian contributes an interview to the programme during which he presents his view of Chaucer and his society with wit, charm and passion and vigorously supports his theory that the poet became a victim of the political upheaval caused by the regime change from Richard II to Henry IV.
