Her Majesty - The Queen Mother 1900-2002
Cat No. GUDVD5464

Sir John Mills introduces a celebration of the life of one of the best-loved Royals. Throughout her extraordinary life Her Majesty The Queen Mother had a remarkable ability to reach ordinary people. Her life was one of duty, serving the nation. Although her great age and ill-health left her frail in the latter years, she tirelessly continued her public duties, determined not to disappoint her people. From her birth, to the morale-boosting visits to bombed parts of Britain during World War Two and into peacetime, this DVD celebrates an amazing life. Unashamedly extravagant and gloriously grand, she lived in a style she had grown up with, no matter how much the modern world changed. Yet it is not her profligacy we remember her for, but the patriotism and pride she would never surrender.

The mines of the Isle of Man are located in some of the most remote sites to be found anywhere in Europe. It was here that miners in Victorian times struggled to bring up lead and copper from deep underground. On the island there are many examples of brilliant Victorian mine engineering. At Laxey, the world's biggest water wheel was built to pump water from the lead mines. In this video, Charles Guard visits these sites, and explores the remains of a once thriving industry. He rediscovers the miles of channels round the hillsides and takes the cameras deep underground to see long-forgotten machines.

Every Day Except Christmas

 Every Day Except Christmas
Cat No. DMDVD6179

Every Day Except Christmas is a rare opportunity to meet the characters and witness the sights and sounds at London’s iconic Covent Garden market in a bygone era. This ground-breaking and award-winning documentary is widely regarded as the cornerstone of the Free Cinema movement and pioneered a style of film making which continues to influence modern documentary production to this day.Made for the Ford Motor Company’s ‘Look at Britain’ series in 1957, Every Day Except Christmas was directed by Lindsay Anderson, who would go on to direct critically-acclaimed feature films including If…. and This Sporting Life. The observational style allows the viewer to become part of the journey as flowers, fruit and vegetables make their way to market, and watch as the stalls burst into life. Every Day Except Christmas introduced an innovative style of film-making, showing the dignity and diligence of working class Britain in the 1950s through improvised, atmospheric footage of real people going about their business – a style which modern reality TV owes much to. We see the produce making its way to London, meet the characters who prepare the stalls, experience the stillness of the twilight hours giving way to the hustle and bustle of the day, watch the buyers and sellers trade and truly share a unique taste of Covent Garden in 1957. Narration comes courtesy of Alun Owen, the actor and renowned screenplay writer responsible for penning such hits as The Beatles’ 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night. His commentary delivers a poetic quality, perfect alongside the evocative soundtrack of Daniel Paris. The excellence of Every Day Except Christmas was highly praised in its day – earning rave reviews after its showing at the National Film Theatre and winning the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival – and it remains an important piece of social history as well as a pioneering piece of film making.

Manxman & Company

 Manxman & Company
Cat No. DMDVD9493

Britain’s history as a maritime nation is rich and varied, and the ferry trade is no exception. The Manxman was the last ship of her type left in the British waters; a symbol of a bygone era when shipbuilding drove the British economy. Although her basic design dated back to the 1930’s, she was craftsman built in 1955 for the world’s oldest and most distinguished ferry operator, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. She survived to be the last traditional steam turbine, passenger-only vessel to operate in European waters, serving the Steam Packet until 1982. As all her sisters and consorts went to the breakers, the Manxman was saved. She had several ‘adventures’: some good, most not so.

The paintings of Raphael demonstrate the results of his valuable research into the past and his Renaissance counterparts twinned with a poignant sense of deeply human poetry. Heavily influenced by his early life in Urbino and the loss of his parents while still a child, Raphael started his career as a teenager. He moved to Perugia, where the influences of Umbria impacted on his work, and by 16 he was considered a ‘Master’. It was the beginning of a career which, while short, would impact on every aspect of the fundamental artistic culture in the transition between the 15th and 16th centuries.

“The design of Michelangelo and the color of Titian” is, according to his biographer Carlo Ridolfi, what the young Tintoretto had written on the wall of his studio. True or not, this is an apt description of his painting; painting that engages in the Venetian tradition of colour and the strong design of the Tuscan style. A tireless and uncompromising artist, he never left Venice. Many buildings and churches across the lagoon shine with the light of his paintings, and his works can now be seen in the major museums of the world.

Discover The Great Masters Of Art Beato Angelico

Discover The Great Masters Of Art Beato Angelico
Cat No. DMDVD7088

Born at the dawn of the 15th century in the Italian region of Mugello, near the birthplace of Giotto, Beato Angelico was a central figure of the early Renaissance. A contemporary of Masaccio, he was deeply influenced by his lessons, not only in the conception of space, but also in the interpretation of the relationship between nature and faith. However, his interpretation of this relationship was less dramatic. For this reason, for a long time, his art was substantially underestimated and considered only to be the expression of a simple and devoted spirit. In this absorbing programme we rediscover the genius of an innocent, devout and hardworking painter whose work developed alongside changes in religion, politics and art. We visit the locations of his great works, and the places which shaped them – including Florence and Rome – and follow his career from a teen novice to a leading name in art, and the Domician movement.

At the dawn of the 14th century, Giotto’s painting was the expression of a world evolving towards new horizons. A new confidence in mankind, the awareness of playing an active role in his own time, having a ‘moral’ and ‘material’ place in the world – all these features, typical of the Italian Renaissance, can be traced in his work. Focused on emotions, people and lives, Giotto’s frescos make a decisive break with the abstract and affected mysticism of Byzantine art and depict his own times, starting one of the most sensational revolutions in the history of art.
