"Charlie Chaplin - The Rink" also featuring "The Floorwalker", "By The Sea" and "His Generation"

"Charlie Chaplin - The Rink" also featuring "The Floorwalker", "By The Sea" and "His Generation"
Cat No. SUN-9001

The Rink - 1916 – Black & White. Both the fool and the hero, Chaplin stars in this chaotic film as both an incompetent waiter and the rather elegant Sir Cecil Seltzer. It is as this second character that Chaplin woos the leading lady at a skating party but continually runs into his arch rival, Mr Stout. Chaplin’s escape from the ensuing chaos is done with style, the help of his walking cane and a fast moving car! The Floorwalker - 1916 – Black & White. Based in a Department store, high farce ensues when Chaplin comes across a rogue Store Manager and his ‘Floorwalker’ who are robbing the store safe. With the money safely in the bag, all the baddies have to do is escape! Includes a classic version of the ‘running down the up-escalator’ gag and ends up with the Store Manager with his head stuck in a elevator door. By the Sea - 1915 – Black & White. As is often the case, peace and tranquility, this time by the seaside, do not last long as Chaplin slips on his own banana skin! The resulting struggle with a Drunk includes an ice cream fight and the involvement of innocent bystanders and the Police. Chaplin tries it on with a beautiful girl (or course!) and escapes when everyone else falls off a bench. His Generation - 1915 – Black & White. A very small comeo role for Chaplin in this film – he comes in, falls over and …….that’s it! It seems Chaplin’s involvement in this film was more to do with his business relationship with the leading actor, G.M. Anderson, than any real acting participation – it is possible Chaplin helped his friend with the direction of this tale.

"Charlie Chaplin - The A.M." also featuring "The Pawnshop" and "His New Job"

"Charlie Chaplin - The A.M." also featuring "The Pawnshop" and "His New Job"
Cat No. SUN-9002

The A.M. - 1916 – Black & White. His only solo performance, Chaplin’s supporting cast of animal skin rugs, battling furniture and a fold down wall bed which refuses to co-operate, leaves a rather drunken Chaplin spending the remainder of the night asleep in the bath tub! It’s not even his house! The Pawnshop - 1916 – Black & White. Chaplin is the more than incompetent assistant at a Pawnbrokers shop. Includes great scenes of Chaplin trying to dust an electric fan whilst it’s running, drying the dishes with a clothes wringer and perhaps the greatest scene of his career – a customer brings in an alarm clock to pawn, Chaplin, through a series of farcical examinations ends up dismantling the clock and returning to the gentleman in it’s component form as not acceptable. His New Job - 1915 – Black & White. The story is based around the idea of Chaplin attending a studio for a job and despite a very favourable flirtation with a young lady (what else!), he doesn’t get the job. Rejected, Chaplin embarks on a rambling stroll around the studio with chaos not far behind. Look out for a brief appearance by Gloria Swanson, here at the very beginning of her long career.

"Charlie Chaplin - A Night Out" also featuring "Kid Auto At The Races", "Cruel, Cruel Love", "A Film Johnny" and "Behind The Screen"

"Charlie Chaplin - A Night Out" also featuring "Kid Auto At The Races", "Cruel, Cruel Love", "A Film Johnny" and "Behind The Screen"
Cat No. SUN-9003

A Night Out - 1915 – Black & White. Chaplin and his side-kick in this film, Ben Turpin, have embarked on a night out of trying to drink the town dry. The resulting drunkenness ensures that a small dog, a beautiful woman, a slipper, an embittered husband and a soda syphon are all included in the chaos. Also notable, this film launched the career of the beautiful woman, Edna Purviance, who was to appear in all but two of Chaplin’s films over the next eight years. Kid Auto at the Races - 1914 – Black & White. Made by the Keystone Studio, this film was only Chaplin’s second and features our hero just getting in the way! A real life children’s auto race is being filmed at Venice Beach, California and this back drop is just an opportunity for Chaplin to create impromptu fun from what he finds around him. This film helped cement Chaplin’s relationship with the Keystone Studio, from which they both benefited greatly. Cruel, Cruel Love - 1914 – Black & White. The well-to-do Lord Helpus, Chaplin, has been caught (surprise surprise!) canoodling with the maid. Understandably, his real sweetheart dumps him and a remorseful Lord Helpus decides to end it all with a cup of poison. The doctors are called, the sweetheart forgives him and the poison turns out to have been a glass of harmless water! A Film Johnny - 1914 – Black & White. After seeing a beautiful girl on the screen at a cinema, our hero decides to track her down and his campaign takes him to the studio where the film in which she featured was made. Once again, the humour is primarily made from Chaplin just getting in the way! Look out for the appearance of Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle. Behind the Screen - 1916 – Black & White. A difficult film to describe in any way other than ‘just chaotic’. Chaplin, helping a good looking girl get into ‘the movies’ finds himself the target of many custard pie throwers. Despite the quantity of pie thrown, Chaplin never gets hit, luck which was to stay with him throughout his movie career.

"Charlie Chaplin - Recreation" also featuring "A Woman", "The Rival Mashers" and "A Night In The Show"

"Charlie Chaplin - Recreation" also featuring "A Woman", "The Rival Mashers" and "A Night In The Show"
Cat No. SUN-9004

Recreation - 1914 – Black & White. Oddly enough, the cause of our hero’s mayhem is his affection for a young lady! This time, the focus of Chaplin’s attention is the girl friend of a sailor. Coupled with the inclusion of a couple of Policemen, Chaplin has to be at his best to avoid trouble – this he does by pushing Policemen and Sailor into a park lake! A Woman - 1915 – Black & White. This time, Chaplin himself becomes the dame at the centre of male admiration! In an attempt to escape the clutches of two rivals in love he dresses as a woman, shaves off his trade mark moustache and hey presto! – not a bad looking dame! The rivals fall for the disguise and Chaplin tries to make his escape, only to fall foul at the fathers hands of the true beauty. The Rival Mashers (Those Love Pangs) - 1914 – Black & White. In a tale of the movies and women, Charlie finds himself in the enviable and, for him, unusual position of winning the hearts of two fair maidens at the same time. He then falls asleep! And he then gets thrown the screen of the cinema! A Night in the Show - 1915 – Black & White. An ‘elegant’ gentleman, too much to drink, a married woman, spilt beer, snakes and a snake charmer, a tomato fight, an ice cream fight, a fire eater and a fire hose – ahh, that’ll be a Charlie Chaplin film then! This film is based on one of the stories often performed by Chaplin when he was still a star of the stage.

"Charlie Chaplin - Work" also featuring "In The Park", "The Good For Nothing" and Triple Trouble"

"Charlie Chaplin - Work" also featuring "In The Park", "The Good For Nothing" and Triple Trouble"
Cat No. SUN-9005

Work - 1915 – Black & White. The tale of a paper hanger (always a good source of mirth) called Izzy A. Wake and his hapless assistant, Chaplin. Other characters include the man of the house, his wife, an amorous Frenchman and a maid, the latter being the target of our hero’s attention. A large bucket of wallpaper paste and an exploding oven seem to settle matters! In the Park - 1915 – Black & White. A recipe for spring time fancy featuring theft, Frenchmen, pocketbooks, nursemaids, portly gentlemen and a string of hot dog sausages! Covered with a liberal sprinkling of farce (oh, and a few people getting wet) and you have the perfect day out. The Good for Nothing (His New Profession) - 1914 – Black & White. Charlie Chaplin taking advantage of an invalid gentleman by putting a beggars sign around him and taking him on a tour of the park in the hope he can supplement his income with a few extra donations! No surprise he gets caught out and loses his new job. Triple Trouble - 1918 – Black & White. A film made up from footage shot at several different times and for different stories. It is very clever that these ‘odd’ sections of film seem to have been knitted together to form a complete and coherent story.

"Charlie Chaplin - The Tramp" also featuring "Police" and "A Jitney Elopement"

"Charlie Chaplin - The Tramp" also featuring "Police" and "A Jitney Elopement"
Cat No. SUN-9006

The Tramp - 1915 – Black & White. Classic Chaplin – despite being a down and out, Charlie shows us that he can still be the perfect gentleman when it comes to looking after himself as well as the beautiful girl. Although tatty, his suit, bowler hat, tie and walking cane set him apart from the hoboes who try and steal his lunch and steal from the farmhouse where he has taken shelter. Even though he doesn’t get the girl and his circumstances have changed little, we see Chaplin in the closing scenes ever hopeful walking off into the distance. Police - 1916 – Black & White. Even when released from prison, Chaplin soon returns to his life of crime and attempts a robbery with an old prison acquaintance. Naturally, all does not go to plan, the robbery fails but Charlie manages to woo the lady of the house who eventually gives him a dollar and off he goes, happy as can be – but the Police are not far behind! A Jitney Elopement - 1915 – Black & White. Once again, Chaplin as the down and out comes across a girl, this one is to be wed, against her wishes, to a Count. Charlie manages to persuade her father that he is the Count and almost get away with it until the real Count turns up. Our hero escapes, with the girl, in a ‘jitney’ (hire car) and a text book comedy car chase follows. In this charming film, Charlie does get the girl in the end – hurray!

"Charlie Chaplin - Shanghaied" also featuring "The Count" and "The Cure"
Cat No. SUN-9007

Shanghaied - 1915 – Black & White. A tale of the high seas and of high conspiracy, Chaplin finds himself employed as an assistant cook aboard a ship heading for nothing but trouble. The ship’s owner and Captain try to sink the vessel in an attempt to collect the insurance money – what rascals! The ship owners daughter, naturally a beautiful girl, has stowed away and knows nothing of her fathers dirty tricks – fortunately, our hero saves her and the day. The Count - 1916 – Black & White. Whilst working as a tailor’s assistant, Chaplin crosses his employer with the usual chaotic consequences. The tailor comes across an invitation to a party for the wealthy socialite, Miss Moneybags. The invitation is found in the clothes of the Count and the tailor decides to masquerade as the Count. By coincidence, Charlie is at the house of Miss Moneybags visiting his friend, the cook. The tailors deception is exposed by our hero and the usual shenanigans ensue. The Cure - 1917 – Black & White. A visit to a health spa has an outcome far from that which those seeking complete rest and recuperation are expecting! Charlie decides to take a stock of rum with him whilst visiting the spa and needless to say, the rum ends up in the healing waters. A sadistic masseur, a chap with the gout, the pretty girl (of course) and a spa full of drunks collectively give our hero an unforgettable hangover.

"Charlie Chaplin - The Fireman" also featuring "The Adventurer" and "The Vagabond"
Cat No. SUN-9008

The Fireman - 1916 – Black & White. Our hero as a fireman – surely not! Charlie brings a new level of incompetence to the most worthy of professions, however, despite his ineptitude he still manages to save a beautiful girl from a nasty end. The Adventurer - 1917 – Black & White. Chaplin escapes from prison, steals a bathing suit and saves a girl and her mother who are in danger of drowning. So the scene is set for Charlie to be indulged by these two ladies as reward for saving them. Despite the expected levels of chaos, Charlie enjoys the high life until his picture is seen a newspaper and he is arrested and taken back to prison. The Vagabond - 1916 – Black & White. As an itinerant violinist, Chaplin finds himself in competition with a German street band and loses the contest. He leaves and finds himself at a gypsy encampment playing his violin for a gypsy girl. The pair embark an a trip during which they come across an artist, the girl gets her portrait painted and the picture becomes famous. It turns out that the girl is not a gypsy after all and her real mother recognises her from the portrait, and comes to reclaim her. "Charlie Chaplin - The Immigrant" also featuring "Easy Street" and "The Knockout"

"Charlie Chaplin - The Immigrant" also featuring "Easy Street" and "The Knockout"
Cat No. SUN-9009

The Immigrant - 1917 – Black & White. Charlie finds himself aboard a ship heading for a new life in America. Onboard, be befriends a girl and her mother whom he gives all his money after they have been robbed of what little money they had. Once in the new land, our hero now finds it difficult to eat as he has no money of his own until he finds a coin which he then promptly loses through a hole in his pocket. All turns out well when he finds the girl again and despite some difficulties they finally marry. Easy Street - 1917 – Black & White. In this feature, Chaplin swops in his trademark walking cane for a policeman’s truncheon. Easy Street is a part of town occupied by folk who are rough and tough – not the sort of place for a small and skinny policeman to walk his beat. However, in this classic tale, Chaplin demonstrates that the little guy can win the day. The Knockout - 1914 – Black & White. This is really a Fatty Arbuckle film in which Chaplin has a small part as a troubled and troublemaking boxing referee. As with most ‘Keystone’ comedies, those officers of law and lunacy, The Keystone Cops, ensure that the comic prize fight is followed by a frenzied and chaotic chase. Fatty Arbuckle’s boxing opponent in this film, Edgar Kennedy, was a real boxer, once going 14 rounds with the great Jack Dempsey.

"Charlie Chaplin - The Champion" also featuring "Between Showers", "The Bank" and "Mabel At The Wheel"

"Charlie Chaplin - The Champion" also featuring "Between Showers", "The Bank" and "Mabel At The Wheel"
Cat No. SUN-9010

The Champion - 1915 – Black & White. Chaplin as a down and out is driven to a boxing career as a way of earning money to feed himself and his faithful bulldog. Boxing is a tough game for a little guy and Charlie discovers that by putting a horseshoe in one of his gloves he greatly improves his chances of winning! This tactic leads our hero, now named the ‘Jersey Mosquito’ to a championship fight and with the help of his trusted dog, Chaplin becomes The Champion. Between Showers - 1914 – Black & White. In this early Keystone Comedy, Chaplin finds a competitor for both an umbrella and a girl. The two ‘fatuous adorers’ partake in many efforts to out do each other to earn the favour of the young lady and the use of the umbrella. This was quite an early film in Chaplin’s career and he demonstrates here that his trademark character is almost fully developed by this time. The Bank - 1915 – Black & White. Chaplin works in a bank, knows the combination to the vault and appears to be quite important – he is actually the janitor. Charlie believes a female colleague at the bank loves him, which is actually not the case. In a dream, our hero thwarts a bank robbery, rescues his true love and saves the day. He turns to kiss the beautiful girl and finds he has woken up and is actually kissing his mop! Mabel at the Wheel - 1914 – Black & White. In this Keystone Comedy, Chaplin plays the villain in car race (based on the Vanderbilt Cup). Charlie’s henchmen hold captive Mabel’s lover, a competitor in the race and she takes his place behind the wheel of his car. Despite the villains attempts to scupper her chances, Mabel goes on to win the race.

"Laurel and Hardy - Lucky Dog" also featuring "Hop To It" and "Enough To Do"

"Laurel and Hardy - Lucky Dog" also featuring "Hop To It" and "Enough To Do"
Cat No. SUN-9011

Lucky Dog - 1920 – Black & White. STORY: A stray dog befriends Stan Laurel and helps him outwit a robber, Oliver Hardy, and a Swiss count, who turns out to be the robber in disguise ! The first on screen pairing of the most famous comedy double act of all time, it all started here. Hop To It Bell Hop - 1925 – Black & White. STORY: This is a fun little film, starring Oliver ‘Babe’ Hardy as the villain. We are used to him being pushy and browbeating Stan Laurel, but in this film his ‘victim’ is Bobby Ray. This is a very devious and mean Ollie indeed! Good for a chuckle. Enough To Do - 1926 – Black & White. Also known as ‘Wandering Papas’ in USA. STORY: A cook for a bridge constructor is told to collect food for dinner - trout, rabbit and a frosted cake. He sets off into the wide open spaces to collect the food, tries to catch fish using flypaper and succeeds in catching a skunk by the tail. Oliver Hardy in "Wizard Of Oz"

Oliver Hardy in "Wizard Of Oz"
Cat No. SUN-9013

Wizard Of Oz - 1925 – Black & White. Oliver Hardy has a prominent role as the Tin Man in this loosely-adapted version of the Frank Baum story. Larry Semon is the lead character who works on a farm. He is the rival for Dorothy with Oliver Hardy. The great Sennett comedian Charlie Murray plays the old medicine show faker who masquerades as The Wizard of Oz. As the movie unfolds Larry and his sidekick must deal with Royal court intrigue and a mangy lion who seems less than cowardly! This film was tailored more as a vehicle for Larry Semon's sight-gags and chases but the flavor of Oz is still present. This film was released at the height of Semon's popularity in the mid-twenties but was distributed by a company which soon went out of business. Semon did not get the exposure and circulation necessary to keep him on top of the heap with other comedians of the day and he soon faded from the scene within a few years and died in 1928 from tuberculosis. Oliver Hardy, of course, went on to perpetual fame with Stan Laurel who also worked briefly with Semon in 1918 when Semon was just beginning his ten year film career. A Toymaker tells a bizarre story about how the Land of Oz was ruled by Prince Kynd, but he was overthrown by Prime Minister Kruel. Dorothy learns from Aunt Em that fat, cruel Uncle Henry is not her uncle, and gives her a note due on her eighteenth birthday, which reveals she is actually Princess Dorothea of Oz, and is supposed to marry Prince Kynd. She, Uncle Henry, and two farmhands are swept to Oz by a tornado. Snowball, a black farmhand soon joins them after a lightning bolt chases him into the sky. They land in Oz, where the farmhands try to avoid capture. Semon becomes a scarecrow, Hardy briefly disguises himself as a Tin Woodman, and Snowball is given a Lion suit by the Wizard, which he uses to scare the Pumperdink guards. Lots of chortle and mirth!

"Laurel and Hardy - Kid Speed" also featuring "Yes Yes Nanette" and "The Paper Hanger's Helper"

"Laurel and Hardy - Kid Speed" also featuring "Yes Yes Nanette" and "The Paper Hanger's Helper"
Cat No. SUN-9014

Kid Speed - 1924 – Black & White. Avery DuPoise is a wealthy business man, organising a race. He meets one the competitors of the race, who is in love with DuPoises daughter. Another competitor crashes into the action, who is also in love DuPoises daughter. DuPoise suggests that whoever wins the race will have the opportunity to visit his daughter every Wednesday night. An action packed races commences, with one competitor doing more than usual to win the race. We all know what became of Oliver Hardy, but Larry Semon's early death in the 1920s robbed us of what could have been a great comedian in the sound era as well as a talented presence in the silent films. Fast and furious! Yes, Yes, Nanette- 1925 – Black & White. Nanette sends home a letter to her family telling of her new husband, Hillory. When Hillory arrives to meet the family, he gets insulted by each member, including the dog, and loses his wig. After having dinner with the family, Nanettes' former lover (Oliver Hardy) returns, who Hillory must confront. Directed by Stan Laurel. This is Slapstick at its Best! The Paper Hanger's Helper - 1925 – Black & White. Two paperhangers are employed by a sanitarium to hang up some posters. Chaos ensues. In the year that Charles Chaplin signed up with Essanay Films to write, direct and act in his own two reelers, Oliver Hardy (known as Babe Hardy) was earning his living by acting in one reelers such as 'The Paperhanger's Helper'. He would have to wait until he teamed up with Stan Laurel in 1927 in the classic silent short film, 'You're Darn Tootin', before he would receive the same level of success as Chaplin.

Cat No. SUN-9015

The Stolen Jools (Also known as ‘The Slippery Pearls’) - 1931 – Black & White. This star-packed short film was intended to raise funds for the National Variety Artists Tuberculosis Hospital, ironically it was produced in association with a cigarette company! In a Los Angeles police station, it is reported that Norma Shearer's pearls have been stolen. A detective is sent to the actress' home to interrogate party guests, most of whom are famous Hollywood stars. The detective ends up chasing leads all over town, ending up at a movie studio, where he learns the truth behind "the slippery pearls." Also features Buster Keaton and Edward G. Robinson. A non-stop chucklefest! The Sawmill - 1922 – Black & White. Featuring Oliver Hardy and Larry Semon – chaos in a Sawmill? Could be dangerous – ouch! The Tree In A Test Tube- 1943 – Black & White. A short public service film about the many uses of plastic! THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE was made as a non-theatrical industrial film. It utilized the services of Laurel & Hardy to help convey a message, aimed at wartime audiences, from the United States Department of Agriculture about wood-related products. Laurel and Hardy shot their brief, wordless bit over a lunch hour (while filming Jitterbugs) and the narration for their scene was provided by Pete Smith, who was then producing and narrating very funny short subjects for MGM. Only interesting because, as long as The Rogue Song remains lost, it's the only film The Boys made in colour.

Having taken in her first husband, Oliver Hardy, as a lodger, due to financial difficulties, and now living with her second husband, she must act to convince her aunt, that she is still married to her first husband, which is not taken gracefully by her second husband. A giggle! Short Kilts - 1924 – Black & White. One of the better Stan Laurel solo shorts, Stan is seen in this ensemble comedy of feuding Scotch families with the ever-reliable foil James Finlayson as well as Our Gang members Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman. The plot is the simple matter of a feud between families, and that's just an excuse to set-up a series of slapstick sketches. The simplicity of the humor has an air of nostalgia to it. Vintage mirth. Smithy (Also known as The Home Wrecker (UK) - 1924 – Black & White. After being discharged from the 372nd infantry, on account of a bean shortage, Smithy, Stan Laurel, seeks employment. He finds this at a construction site, where he helps to build a house, and soon causes havoc amongst other workers. The construction company owner leaves for a week, and tells his secretary to send a letter to Mr. Smith telling him to complete the construction of the house while he (the owner) is away. The letter is accidently sent to Smithy who manages to complete the house. When the owner returns the house is complete, and Smithy is commended until the last support beam is removed...Fall down funny!

"Laurel and Hardy - The Soilers" also featuring "Thundering Fleas", "White Wings" and "Show"
Cat No. SUN-9019

The Soilers - 1923 – Black & White. Westerns provided many opportunities for comedians to lampoon the genre. "THE SOILERS" is an outrageous parody of the famous Rex Beach story "THE SPOILERS". The slapstick brawl between Stan and villain James Finlayson is occasionally interrupted by one of the screen's first alternative life-style cowboys! Stan Laurel is Canister and Jimmy Finlayson is Smacknamara. Laurel and Finlayson rip into each other with all the ferocity of John Wayne's and Randolph Scott's 1942 version, but with lovely comic moments interspersed throughout the fight. The utter indifference of the saloon crowd to the massive melée taking place in their midst is classic vintage humour. Knock Me Down Funny! Thundering Fleas - 1926 – Black & White. An all-star Our Gang comedy, in which all sorts of Hal Roach regulars and mini-stars -- except Stan Laurel -- appear. The sole gag here is that a bunch of fleas gets loose at the gorgeous Martha Sleeper's wedding, causing all sorts of consternation. Is that a tickle or an itch? White Wings - 1923 – Black & White. In "WHITE WINGS", Stan Laurel goes totally surreal! As a street-cleaner he accidentally walks off with a baby carriage instead of his cleaning carriage. A cop chases after him and Stan's attempts to disguise himself as everything from a statue to a six-foot baby to a dentist make this one of his most bizarre comedies. Show - 1922 – Black & White. A Vaudeville theater provides the setting for a wild chase with Oliver Hardy and Larry Semon in "THE SHOW".

Cat No. SUN-9020

Laurel & Hardy Home Movies Stan Laurel – 1890 – 1965 Stan, christened Arthur Stanley Jefferson was born in Ulverston, England in 1890. His father was an actor and theatre manager. When he was 16, Stan left school to work with his father in theatre. His fathers influence in the entertainment industry that provided Stan with the opportunity to perform in several stage productions. It was this initial coverage that led to his appointment with the well known Fred Karno performers. It was this appointment that introduced Stan to another Karno member, Charlie Chaplin. Stan was to understudy Chaplin, and follow the Karno group on a US tour. However when Chaplin dispatched from the Karno Troupe, the tour soon folded. When the Karno group split, Stan, with two former Karno members formed the Keystone Trio, and later the Jefferson Trio. It was at this time that Stan adopted the stage name Laurel. After an appearance in the film Nuts in May (1917), Universal Studios signed up Stan for a series of short films including The Soilers (1920), Under Two Jags (1920), Blood And Sand (1922), Dr. Pryde And Mr. Hyde (1925), and many others. In 1926 Stan began working with Hal Roach, one of the greatest movie directors that time. Although Stan first appeared with Ollie in film named The Lucky Dog, It was to be nearly a decade, before the two would pair up in another film. Their first feature-length starring roles were in Pardon Us (1931). Their work became more production-line and less popular during the war years, mostly producing for Twentieth Century-Fox. Their last movie together was a French failure Atoll K (1950). In 1960 he was awarded an Oscar for his creative contributions to the pioneering field of cinema comedy. Stan Laurel died in February 23rd 1965 following a hearth attack. Stan's final resting place is in Burbank at the Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery. Oliver Hardy – 1892 - 1957 Ollie was born on the 18 Jan 1892 in Harlem, Georgia. He studied Law at the Georgia State University and spent his time between studies singing at the Atlanta Conservatory of Music. In 1913 Ollie expressed an interest in the new-found motion picture industry where he began work with the Florida based 'Lubin Company'. It was in his early days with the Lubin company that he picked up the nickname 'Babe' that was to stay with him for the rest of his life. One of the many 'two reelers' that Babe appeared in was 'Lucky Dog' where he had a brief encounter with Stan Laurel. It would be almost a decade before the boys would feature together again. In 1926 Ollie, became member of Hal Roach Company (Oliver Hardy starred in 252 films without Stan). After featuring together in the movie 'Duck Soup' the boys transformed into the best comedy duo of cinema history. Their first feature-length starring roles were in Pardon us (1931). After over two decades of success paired with Stan, Ollie appeared without Stan in The Fighting Kentuckian (1949) and Riding High (1950). Oliver Hardy died august 7th, 1957 following a major stroke which left him seriously debilitated in the months before his death. Oliver's ashes were interred in the Masonic section of the Garden of Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Lucky Dog – 1920 - STORY: A stray dog befriends Stan Laurel and helps him outwit a robber (Oliver Hardy) and a Swiss count, who turns out to be the robber in disguise. This is the first film in which Stan & Ollie were seen together – this is where it all started.

"Well let me tell you a story about a man named Jed, a poor mountaineer who barely kept his family fed, then one day he was shooting at some food, when up from the ground came a bubblin' crude. Oil that is, black gold...Texas tea." Classic US sitcom following the adventures of Jed Clampett and his family who, after discovering oil at the back of their Ozark ranch, pack up their things and move to Beverly Hills, much to the consternation of the local populace. The Clampett family consisted of Jed (Buddy Ebsen), Granny Clampett (Irene Ryan), dim witted cousin Jethro (Max Baer Jnr), and kindly, animal loving Elly May (Donna Douglas). Rather than poking fun at the Hillbillies, the series underlying theme was nothing less than an out and out attack on materialism and became the fastest ratings hit in US TV history, progressing to the top of the chart within four months and remaining there for two years. Even viewed today with the more sophisticated (jaded) eyes of a modern viewer, The Beverly Hillbillies delights as an excellent example of the US sitcom at its very best. The Clampetts may not have had poise and polish. But they had something infinitely more valuable...genuine class.  "I Love Lucy - The Diet" starring Lucille Ball
Cat No. SUN-9096

"Since we said 'I do' there are so many things that we don't! A genuine pioneer in the way in which TV programmes were recorded and presented, I Love Lucy laid down the all important, yet deceptively simple winning pattern for the domestic sitcom as far back as 1951. Remaining the creative template that is still followed to this day, the series also elevated it's star, Lucille Ball, to be regarded by many as US television's comedienne without peer. The series centred on the life of Lucy Ricardo the scatterbrained wife and showbiz wannabee of Cuban dance leader Ricky. The Ricardo's lived in an apartment on the East side of Manhattan where Lucy hatched most of her disaster prone schemes to improve life around the home, make money, or be anything other than an ordinary housewife. Sharing these adventures with her was best friend Ethel Mertz, married to the considerably older Fred, who's wisecracking asides made him a viewers favourite. It is estimated that the show has been running somewhere in the world at any time for over fifty years. A hit on both sides of the Atlantic I Love Lucy was also the first US sitcom to be seen on British television, when in 1955 it appeared in ITV's first week on air. Whilst most shows come and go only to be forgotten in the mists of time, there are some that are assured of their place in television history. "Africa Screams" with Abbott And Costello

"Africa Screams" with Abbott And Costello
Cat No. SUN-9113

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello temporarily leave their usual Universal stamping grounds to star in this Huntington Hartford production, Africa Screams. Costello plays the colourfully inept Stanley Livingstone, a meek book salesman who poses as a big-game hunter at the behest of his shifty pal Buzz Johnson (Abbott). It's all part of a scheme to extract some money from adventuress Diana Emerson (Hillary Brooke), who intends to search for a lost diamond mine in the heart of Africa. It seems that Stanley has committed to memory a long out-of-print book which contained a map of the mine. Despite his mortal fear of wild animals, Stanley accompanies Buzz, Diana, and Diana's henchmen on the African expedition. The subsequent comic complications involve a legendary giant gorilla, a cannibal tribe, and a friendly orangutan which falls in love with Stanley. Animal trainer Clyde Beatty and big-game tracker Frank Buck make cameo appearances while character comics Shemp Howard and Joe Besser provide laughs as, respectively, a nearsighted gunman and a sissified flunky. Also on hand Max Baer and Buddy Baer, the famous boxing brothers, who engage in an amusingly unconvincing display of fisticuffs. But the film belongs to Abbott & Costello, who are in fine form.

"Jack & The Beanstalk" with Abbott And Costello

"Jack & The Beanstalk" with Abbott And Costello
Cat No. SUN-9114

In 1952, the comedy team of Abbott and Costello entered into a joint agreement with producer Alex Gottlieb and Warner Brothers for the production of two musical comedies in colour. Through this agreement, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello would be producer-owner of one film apiece. Costello's contribution to this agreement was Jack and the Beanstalk, a kiddie-matinee adaptation of the famed fairytale. Constructed along the lines of The Wizard of Oz, the film begins in black and white. Jack (Costello) is a professional baby-sitter, while Dink (Abbott) is Jack's "agent." After a run-in with a gargantuan cop (Buddy Baer) and a statuesque waitress (Dorothy Ford), Jack and Dink show up at the home of Eloise Larkin (Shaye Cogan), to look after Eloise's troublesome nephew Donald (David Stollery). While reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to little Donald, Jack falls asleep, and begins dreaming that he is the impoverished boy sent out to sell the family cow. While en route to town with his cow, he encounters a shady butcher (Abbott) who cons him out of the old beast for the price of a few 'magic' beans. In keeping with the traditional tale, Jack plants the beans and from them a magnificent vine grows which reaches into the clouds. Along with the butcher, Jack climbs into a fantastic world inhabited by a terrifying giant (Baer) and other magical creatures, including a hen which lays golden eggs, a singing harp, and a distressed prince and princess.

Laurel and Hardy in "The Flying Deuces"

Laurel and Hardy in "The Flying Deuces"
Cat No. SUN-9115

In their first starring feature away from the Hal Roach studios, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy play a couple of fish peddlers from Des Moines on a cook's tour of Paris. While stopping over at a quaint inn, Ollie falls in love with the innkeeper's daughter, Georgette (Jean Parker). At Stan's prodding, Ollie pops the question to Georgette, who gently refuses because there is someone else. Disconsolately, Ollie decides to commit suicide by jumping into the Seine, insisting that Stan join him in his plunge to oblivion. Our heroes are halted from this drastic action by the timely arrival of Francois (Reginald Gardiner), an officer in the French Foreign Legion. Francois convinces Stan and Ollie that they'll forget all about Ollie's lost love if they join the Legion, and within a few days our heroes are in uniform at an outpost in French Morocco. Alas, try as he might, Ollie cannot forget his beloved Georgette. After fleeing from the Legion, Ollie is reunited with Georgette, who turns out to be the wife of their commanding officer Francois! Sentenced to death for desertion, the boys tunnel their way out of their jail cell and hide out in an aeroplane, which Stan accidentally sends into flight. After a wild and noisy ride, the plane crashes, leading to the film's hilarious, and somehow touching, "freak" ending. Officially a remake of Les Aviateurs, a French vehicle for Fernandel and Toto, The Flying Deuces also owes a lot to the earlier Laurel & Hardy Foreign Legion farce, Beau Hunks. Highlights include Stan and Ollie's impromptu soft-shoe rendition of "Shine on Harvest Moon".

"March Of The Wooden Soldiers" with Laurel and Hardy

"March Of The Wooden Soldiers" with Laurel and Hardy
Cat No. SUN-9116

This film was originally released in 1934 as Babes in Toyland and again in 1952 as March of the Wooden Soldiers. Laurel and Hardy star as Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee, bumbling apprentices to the master toymaker of Toyland. This joyous fairytale community is populated by all the colourful Mother Goose characters we know and love; the one sour apple in the barrel is mean old Silas Barnaby (portrayed by Henry Kleinbach, aka Henry Brandon). Barnaby holds the mortgage on the outsized shoe where Widow Peep (Florence Roberts) and her daughter Little Bo Peep (Charlotte Henry) live, and where Stan and Ollie also happen to live as lodgers. Bo Peep will be forced to marry the odious Barnaby if the rent is not paid, so Stan and Ollie try to raise the money by asking the toymaker for a pay rise. But the boys are fired when Stan messes up an order from Santa Claus: instead of making six hundred toy soldiers one foot high, the dumb Mr. Dum makes one hundred toy soldiers six feet high. The wedding between Barnaby and Bo Peep goes on as planned, except that it is Stan, disguised as the bride, who ends up walking down the aisle. Publicly humiliated, Barnaby vows revenge. He steals one of the Three Little Pigs and places the blame on Bo Peep's boyfriend, Tom-Tom the Piper's Son (Felix Knight). The penalty for pig-napping is banishment to Bogeyland, a fearsome subterranean world populated by hideous bogeymen. Stan and Ollie expose Barnaby's perfidy and rescue Tom-Tom from Bogeyland, whereupon Barnaby rallies the bogeymen and leads an all-out attack on Toyland. Taking refuge in the toy warehouse, Stan and Ollie activate the 100 wooden soldiers, who soundly beat the Bogeymen and save the day.

"The Pajama Game" with Doris Day

"The Pajama Game" with Doris Day
Cat No. SUN-9117

The Broadway musical 'Pajama Game' was based on Seven and a Half Cents, a comic novel about labour relations written by Richard Bissell. Doris Day stars as an employee at a pajama factory who becomes the spokesperson for her fellow workers when management refuses to give them a 7 1/2 cent pay rise. Complicating matters is the fact that Management is represented by handsome John Raitt, who happens to be in love with Doris. A subplot involves Day's freewheeling co-worker Carol Haney and her insanely jealous boyfriend, factory-manager Eddie Foy Jr. Many of the cast members from the original Broadway production (Raitt, Haney, Foy, Reta Shaw, Peter Gennaro etc.) are here in this film version, as are most of the Richard Adler/Jerry Ross songs: highlights include "Hey There", "Steam Heat", "Hernando's Hideaway", "There Once Was a Man", and the title song. The choreography was carried out by the world famous Bob Fosse, and Pajama Game became a terrific success at the box-office.

Buster Keaton (born Joseph Frank Keaton) was born on 4th October 1895. His acting trademark was physical comedy with a stoic, deadpan expression on his face, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face". His early film work, featured on this DVD, from the 1920’s were a series of ‘Shorts’ produced just after his introduction to film courtesy of that other comedy heavyweight, Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle.

Buster Keaton - Li'l Abner

 Buster Keaton - Li'l Abner
Cat No. SUN-9211

Li'l Abner was the title character in the long-running (1934-1977) syndicated newspaper strip by cartoonist Al Capp. Far from being ‘li’l’, Abner was a fully grown man with a slightly naive view of the world. The original comic strip was Capp's satirical reflection on American life and politics. Portrayed as a bit of a simpleton, Li’l Abner, a citizen of the ficticious town Dogpatch, was a paragon of virtue in the dark and cynical world he found around him. This comedy feature film from 1940, heavily influenced by Buster Keaton’s involvement, is often regarded as the inspiration for many of the great American comedy TV series of the 1950’s and 60’s such as The Beverly Hillbillies and I Love Lucy.

Buster Keaton - Parlor, Bedroom And Bath

Buster Keaton - Parlor, Bedroom And Bath
Cat No. SUN-9212

Based on the stage comedy by Charles W. Bell and Mark Swan, Buster Keaton plays Reginald Irving, a dimwit who finds himself the unsuspecting party in a scheme concocted by wealthy Jeffrey Haywood. It seems that Jeffrey will not be allowed to marry Virginia Embrey until a suitable husband is found for Virginia's older sister Angelica. Since Angelica has rejected all the available suitors, Jeffrey plans to offer Reginald as an eligible mate. First, however, he has to transform our unlikely hero into a gentleman and great lover. Somehow or other, poor Reginald innocently ends up in a compromising situation involving Polly Hathaway and the married Nita Leslie at a sophisticated hotel. This film is notable for a spectacular sight gag "borrowed" from his 1920 silent classic One Week. Incidentally, the impressive New York mansion in the film's early scenes was actually Buster Keaton's Beverly Hills home.

Buster Keaton - Speak Easily

 Buster Keaton - Speak Easily
Cat No. SUN-9213

One of Buster Keaton's best ‘talkies’ features our comedy hero as Professor Post, a naïve college pedantic who mistakenly believes he has inherited $750,000. Hoping to use this windfall to bring the Fine Arts to the waiting world, Post gets mixed up with a less than professional theatrical troupe, headed by Jimmy the piano player (Jimmy Durante). Enchanted by the troupe's libertine leading lady Eleanor Espere, the professor agrees to finance their Broadway-bound musical, assuming it will be presented in tasteful, classical tradition. When he realizes that he's bought into just another girlie show, Post walks onstage to apologize to the opening-night audience, only to become the hit of the show himself as he becomes enmeshed in the production's special stage effects. Post's unconscious silliness saves the musical from becoming a disaster and also somehow wins him the love of Pansy Peets (Ruth Selwyn), the hometown girl he left behind. Based on a novel by Clarence Buddington Kelland, Speak Easily boasts some terrific sight gags, an abundance of hilarious repartee between the usually ill-matched Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante, and a hilarious performance by future "Charlie Chan" Sidney Toler as an apoplectic stage manager.
