Classic Cockpits: Flying The Avro Lancaster

Classic Cockpits: Flying The Avro Lancaster
Cat No. BDV257

A fascinating insight into the cockpit of a classic British heavy bomber - "A pilot's-eye view." Derived from the twin-engine AVRO Manchester, the Lancaster was designed for one purpose; to carry bombs. Its bomb bay was stressed to take more than twenty thousand pounds of high explosives. Powered by four Rolls Royce engines, it carried enough fuel to take it deep into the German heartland, destroying cities and wreaking havoc on Hitler's heavy industries. The Lancaster is probably best known for the famous 'Dam Busters Raid' in May 1943, when aircraft of the RAF's 617 Squadron attacked the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe and Ennepe damns in the Ruhr, using the revolutionary 'bouncing bomb' designed by Sir Barnes Wallis. In this documentary film the Lancaster is flown from its base at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at Hamilton, Ontario by Don Schofield, a retired Air Canada captain. After a detailed cockpit tour and pre-flight inspection, we join the crew for some local flying in the Hamilton area. Multiple cameras provide detailed coverage in the cockpit while cameras in accompanying B-25 Harvard and Bell Jetranger provide spectacular aerial prospective.

MiG-29

 MiG-29
Cat No. BDV081

Arguably the most advanced strike aircraft in the world today, the MiG 29's manoeuvrability and stability at high angles of attack make it a formidable weapon. Developed in the sinister days of the cold war, the concept behind the MiG was to design an aircraft specifically for both offensive and defensive roles - a major departure from usual Soviet thinking. The capabilities of the MiG 29 exceeded the Soviet's wildest expectations, and even without the electronic sophistication of some of its western counterparts NATO breathed a sigh of relief when detente became reality. The film tells the story of the MiG's evolution, from initial brief to the Mikoyan Design Bureau, through design, development, testing, flight trials and deployment. This programme includes superb archive footage, original interviews with designers and pilots, plus an exclusive interview with the man responsible for testing the plane to its limits - Leonid Lobos, former chief test pilot of the Confederation of Independent States. With its attention to technical detail, unique interviews and amazing footage, this programme presents the definitive story of one of the Soviet's greatest fighters, the MiG 29. The Strike Force series features war planes from all around the world. Fighters and bombers from past and present are analysed and explored, giving a fascinating insight into the formidable power of strike aircraft that will appeal to enthusiasts of all ages.

Classic Cockpits - Flying The PBY Catalina

Classic Cockpits - Flying The PBY Catalina
Cat No. BDV201

Designed in 1935, the PBY-5 Catalina served with distinction in both Atlantic and pacific theatres, as long-range maritime patrol bomber and air-sea rescue aircraft. Join ZK-PBY en route to lake Taupo, in New Zealand's North Island, for a training weekend. To preserve the hull from corrosion, the PBY-5A never lands on the sea and rarely in freshwater. Training captain Brett Emeny takes us on a walk-around. The hull shape, as well as the fittings and features, reflect the aircraft's dual roles of being speedboat and flying machine. The cabin interior is also unique: Part boat, part aircraft. We now join Brett and other Catalina club pilots in cockpit operations. Sound recorded directly from the Cat's intercom allows us to hear all cockpit conversations. Filmed also from helicopter and a speedboat, the water landings are spectacular!

Yesterday We Were In America

 Yesterday We Were In America
Cat No. BDV270

In the summer of 1919, two WWI flying aces climbed into the open cockpit of a converted bomber aircraft, a Vicker's Vimy, and embarked on the world's first non-stop transatlantic flight. Sixteen gruelling hours later they touched down on the west coast of Ireland and entered the history books. This is a drama documentary chonicling the remarkable achievement of Jack Alcock and Arthur Brown. It tells the story of unlikely pait of heroes, a navigator and a pilot, who met just six weeks before the flight during a chance encounter. Sharing a love of flying, a thirst for honour and galvanised by a 10,000 reward, they formed a bond of friendship that was tested to its limits during their perilous journey. Together they endured fog, hail and snowstorms. Midway through, one of the engines caught fire and Brown was repeatedly forced out onto the wing to clear ice from the air inlets. As conditions worsened, Alcock fought to regain control when rough weather caused the plane to plunge from four thousand to just sixteen feet above the churning ocean - close enough to taste the salt spray. Using log books, diaries and contemporary reports, the film captures a vanished world of aerial adventure when nations vied to set ever more ambitious records, just fifteen years after the Wright brothers' first powered flight. Alcock and Brown received a hero's welcome back in Britain and a knighthood from King George V. They has proved in Alcock's words, "That there are possibilities of flying between the New and Old worlds" and ushered in the age of transatlantic flight. Their story is interwoven with the story of Sefton Potter and Paul Lomatschinsky who retrace Alcock and Brown's pioneering flight in a modern Diamond DA42 Twin Star. Unlike these latter day enthusiasts though, Alcock and Brown did it with no instruments, no navigational aids and sometimes upside down.

Classic Cockpits: Flying The B-25 Mitchell

Classic Cockpits: Flying The B-25 Mitchell
Cat No. BDV271

The North American B-25 Mitchell is perhaps the best known allied medium bomber of World War Two. It was named to honour General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of military aviation on the United States, in particular the use of bombers against battleships. A rugged, reliable aircraft, the B-25 saw service in almost every theatre with several air forces and was much loved by aircrews. It first captured public attention after General Jimmy Doolittle's audacious raid on Tokyo in April 1942. Sixteen B-25s took off from the carrier USS Hornet, flew to Japan and bombed their target successfully. Return to the Hornet was not part of the plan because the B-25 was never designed for shipboard operation, so the aircraft flew on towards China. Unfortunately, they had been forced to launch prematurely, and at the limit of their fuel, all but one crash-landed short of their pre-arranged destinations. More than 10,000 B-25s were built. The aircraft featured in this DVD is a B-25J, operated by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It came off the production line in 1945, too late for active service so began its working life as a corporate transport. It has been restored in the markings of 98 Squadron RAF and is dedicated to the Canadian personnel who served in that squadron and also to all the members of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum who were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The Story Of Sukhoi

 The Story Of Sukhoi
Cat No. BDV139

The Sukhoi story tells the complete history of one of the world's most famous designers and manufacturers of strike aircraft. A maverick and genius, Sukhoi founded his Design Bureau in 1938. Through the war years, Sukhoi produced the BB-I short-range bomber, four SU fighters and the ER-2 long-range passenger plane ordered by Stalin specifically for his own use. 1944 began an era of Sukhoi jet fighters - the SU-5, the SU-7 with its completely Soviet designed jet engine, the SU-9 and the SU-10 but to fall from favour in Soviet Russia was not difficult. Sukhoi was no exception and the Bureau was closed down in 1949. In 1953 Stalin ordered its reinstatement, specifically to design a plane that would counter the American F-86 'Sabre'. Of the resulting fighters, the SU-15 remained in service for more than 30 years and was the aircraft responsible for shooting down the KAL 747 in 1983. With vintage footage that has never been seen in the West, the programme examines closely the development and capabilities of the later Sukhoi aircraft including the SU-24 Fencer, the SU-25 Frogfoot and the SU-27 Flanker. It conducts with an extraordinary aerial ballet performed by two SU-27's filmed by a third plane. The Cobra's turns and twists make this one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring film sequences ever seen. The STRIKE FORCE series features war planes from all around the world. Fighters and bombers from past and present are analysed and explored, giving a fascinating insight into the formidable power of strike aircraft that will appeal to enthusiasts of all ages.
