"Tarzan and the Green Goddess" starring Herman Brix

"Tarzan and the Green Goddess" starring Herman Brix
Cat No. SUN-9127

In this cracking adventure film from 1938, Lord Greystoke, Tarzan, recounts his recent adventures in Central America. He had been there assisting Major Martling and Ula Vale in their search for the Green Goddess, a totem worshipped by a primitive jungle tribe. Inside the totem is hidden a formula for a super-explosive. After successfully wrestling the totem from the natives they head back to civilisation but are attacked by Raglan, a thug sent to steal the Green Goddess and its formula. On the trail of Raglan, they have to deal with his henchmen and also a party of the natives, sent by the High Priest to retrieve the Goddess. With the Goddess still in Raglan's hands, they are seized by the natives, Tarzan is locked in a small cell with a loosely-tethered lion, while Ula is in an adjacent cell under guard from a hideous jungle hag. Martling, meanwhile, is being forced to watch his bumbling valet, George, being tortured by the natives with the assistance of a nameless expatriate white scientist who had joined forces with the natives... Memorable quote from the film: George: They attacked me - thousands upon thousands! Tarzan: Thousands of what? George: Turtles!

"The Mark Of Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks

"The Mark Of Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks
Cat No. SUN-9170

"The Mark Of Zorro", based on the novel "The Curse of Capristano" by Johnston McCulley, was Douglas Fairbanks Snr first swashbuckling adventure. The story is set in the 19th century in what was Mexican controlled Old California and focuses on the corruption in politics. A mysterious masked man dressed in a dark cloak leaves his "Z" mark with his sword wherever he goes. Who is this masked man known as Zorro? the man who wants to right the injustices done to the common people. At the same time, there is Don Diego Vega, a young man who has just returned from his education in Spain, appearing to all as a foppish weakling who is more interested in music and poetry than fighting for the common cause. The beautiful Lolita (Marguerite De La Motte) finds Don Diego not to her liking but Zorro fascinating and attractive. There are many parallels between Zorro and subsequent superheroes, the quiet and unassuming characters of Clark Kent (Superman), Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Peter Parker (Spiderman) all transformed by a mask. This silent, classic black & white film from 1920, The Mark of Zorro, is perhaps the origin of all modern superheroes.

"The Son Of Monte Cristo" with Louis Hayward and Joan Bennett

"The Son Of Monte Cristo" with Louis Hayward and Joan Bennett
Cat No. SUN-9173

In 1865, General Gurko Lanen (George Sanders) is the evil dictator of the European state of "Lichtenburg". The rightful ruler is the beautiful Grand Duchess Zona (Joan Bennett) and in her attempt to get assistance to overthrow the General, she hopes to get aid from Napoleon III of France. The visiting Count of Monte Cristo (Louis Hayward) falls for Zona and undertakes to help her. During the day, the Count is portrayed as a foppish banker and at night he becomes the masked and caped freedom fighter, ‘The Torch’. The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic tale of good verses evil, thinly disguised as an indictment against 20th century dictatorships as well as being full of good old fashioned rapid-fire intrigue and derring-do.
